According to a news release from Rights Defense Network on April 23, the families of seven people involved in the Hebei Dawu Group, who have been “designated for residential surveillance” by the authorities, received their arrest notices from the police on Thursday. At this point, all of the major principals, including Sun Dawu, have been arrested. The authorities have added new charges to their previous charges of illegal public deposit taking, disrupting production and operation, and provoking trouble, including illegal mining, forced trading and fraud.

According to the arrest notice, authorities charged the group’s main leaders with, among other things, supervisor Sun Dawu with illegal absorption of public deposits, provocation and nuisance, illegal mining, gathering a crowd to storm state organs, illegal occupation of agricultural land, forced trading, disrupting production and operation, and obstructing public service; deputy supervisor Sun Dehua was charged with illegal absorption of public deposits, provocation and nuisance, illegal mining, gathering a crowd to storm Sun Zhihua, the deputy supervisor, was charged with the crimes of unlawful absorption of public deposits, illegal mining, unlawful mining, unlawful impact on state organs, unlawful occupation of agricultural land, forced trading, disrupting production and operation, and obstructing public service; Sun Meng, the chairman of the board, was charged with the crimes of unlawful absorption of public deposits, unlawful occupation of agricultural land, illegal mining, forced trading, and fraud; Liu Ping, the general manager of the group, was charged with the crimes of unlawful absorption of public deposits, unlawful occupation of agricultural land, unlawful mining, forced trading, and obstructing public service. It is reported that the Hebei Dawu Agricultural and Animal Husbandry Group, the head of Sun Dawu and his relatives, as well as the group’s subsidiaries, such as legal persons and nearly 30 people were arrested in the early hours of November 11 last year by the police raid. Subsequently, some of the company’s executives, including Sun Dawu’s wife Liu Huiru, were arrested on charges of “illegally absorbing public deposits,” while other company executives, including Sun Dawu, were taken into compulsory measures by the authorities in the form of “designated residence for residential surveillance.
