Recruitment difficulties and employment pressure coexist, and Chinese young people do not want to enter the factory

China’s college and university graduates will reach 9.09 million this year, with unprecedented employment pressure; meanwhile, China’s manufacturing industry has also faced difficulties in recruiting workers in recent years, and the epidemic has intensified the shift of labor from manufacturing to more flexible time delivery and express delivery industries.

According to the “Research Report on Labor Shortage in First-line Blue-collar Industries” by CIIC, nearly 70% of the enterprises participating in the research are experiencing labor shortage, and 13% of them have long-term labor shortage problems, reports China Business News 21. In addition, nearly 60% of the enterprises with labor shortage show shortage of skilled blue-collar workers or general operators, while 24% of the enterprises have labor shortage of all types of blue-collar workers.

On the other hand, CCTV Finance recently reported, citing information published by a platform, that 580,000 riders were added in two months during last year’s epidemic, 40% of which came from manufacturing workers; the epidemic has intensified the movement of labor between industries.

Although automated production has been gradually promoted in the manufacturing industry, labor shortage still exists. The phenomenon of “difficulty in recruiting” is accompanied by the rising wages of manufacturing workers and the relaxation of recruitment conditions.

The chairman of Zhejiang Quzhou Hengye Auto Parts Co., Ltd, Xia Tiansheng, was quoted by First Financial as saying that the highest wage this month was RMB 14,000 (about NTD 60,000) and the lowest was over RMB 6,000.

This research report shows that in 2020, more than 70% of the enterprises adjusted the salary of blue-collar workers. Among them, more than 40% of enterprises have salary adjustments of less than 5%, and more than 20% of enterprises have salary adjustments of 6% to 8%. It is not uncommon for blue-collar positions to earn more than RMB 10,000 per month.

Ltd. said that companies have been relaxing their educational and age requirements for recruiting workers in recent years. In the past, factories did not recruit people over 45 years old, but now they are relaxed to almost 50 years old; in the past, for office or sales staff require more than 22 years old to graduate from university, but now they can be 20 years old without graduating.

According to the report, 90% of the companies believe that the reason for the blue-collar labor shortage is the low willingness of young people to engage in front-line blue-collar jobs.

The interviewed operators believe that the society generally does not have enough respect for operators who live on skills; in addition, young people prefer free work, but factories have long working hours and militarized management.

Zeng Xiansheng said, “Young people who are capable don’t want to come, and those who are not capable really have no choice but to come.” He believes that even if the manufacturing factory gives a salary more competitive than some positions in network companies, but they will still give preference to the latter.

However, many netizens left a message, the overall manufacturing industry is still too low wages, and more importantly, there is no clear development future.
