Health Canada has issued warnings to shoppers due to some serious safety issues with products sold at Urban Barn, Giant Tiger and Home Hardware, and some injuries have prompted a product recall by major chain giant Costco.
Costco issued an “important recall notice” on April 14 after customers who bought one of the folding stools reported injuries.
Creative Brands LLC, the company that manufactures the folding stools, announced the recall of the Brookstone Folding Step Stool Set of 2, number 1496414 at Costco, which was sold at Costco locations and on its website from February to April of this year.
Costco said in a statement that this folding stool may break accidentally in use, causing a fall hazard to the user.
As of April 12 of this year, there have been four reports of accidents related to the folding stool in Canada, including two injuries.
The recall notice states that if you have purchased this folding stool, please stop using it immediately.

Urban Barn Dashboard Floor Lamp Hazardous
On April 20, Health Canada announced a major recall of dashboard floor lamps sold by Urban Barn Canada.
“The recalled products are black metal floor lamps with bent bodies that include four exposed old-fashioned bulbs. The lamp base is about 62 centimetres (24.5 inches) long and 20 centimetres (8 inches) wide, and the lamp is 176 centimetres (69.25) long. Health Canada said the affected model number is 56006 and the UPC is 2050000387807.
In the recall warning, Health Canada said, “The foot switch may overheat and pose a risk of fire.”
As of April 9, 2020, the company has received three reports of melted floor switches in Canada, and no injuries have been reported.
The company reported that 1,895 affected units were sold in Canada from February 2015 to April 2018.
“Consumers should immediately pull out the recalled bulbs. Those who purchased the bulbs from Urban Barn should contact Urban Barn Customer Service for a refund.

Giant Tiger sells oven mitts that catch fire easily
Health Canada has also informed Canadians of a product recall at Giant Tiger.
The recall involves Proctor Silex Pantone oven mitts in four different colors, Health Canada said in a recall notice issued on April 20.
Health Canada added, “Oven gloves can melt or catch fire when exposed to high temperatures, posing a burn and fire hazard.”
As of April 8, the company had received three reports of the Canadian product melting and catching fire. No injuries have been reported.
Giant Tiger reported 12,587 units of affected products sold in Canada from August 2020 to March 2021.
The statement noted, “Customers who previously purchased the recalled product from Giant Tiger should stop using the product and return it to Giant Tiger for a full refund.”
