Documents unearthed from the Chinese Communist Party propaganda organization China-U.S. Exchange Foundation (CUSEF) reveal a list of “mainstream” Western journalists who participated in tours organized by the organization and were paid to write propaganda articles, National Pulse exclusively revealed on April 22. Such trips are often organized before opinion pieces and news reports are published that excuse the CCP’s crimes or oppose trade showdowns with the CCP.
“Western journalists” on CCP tours
Western journalists, including those praised by Biden and married to White House personnel, are on the list of those receiving trips organized by the Communist Party’s United Front agencies. the following journalists appear in the 2009 and 2010 newsletters of the U.S. Exchange Foundation.
Ezra Klein, co-founder of the media outlet Vox and a New York Times columnist, and Matthew Yglesias, another co-founder.
Ronald Brownstein, senior political analyst at CNN and senior editor at The Atlantic
New York Times (New York Times) reporter Bradford Plumer
Marjorie Miller, Vice President and Editor, Associated Press (AP)
Steven Clemons, Contributing Editor, The Hill
Marilyn Geewax, former senior editor at National Public Radio (NPR)
Kathleen Deveny, former markets editor for Newsweek and the Wall Street Journal
Tom Omestad, former reporter for U.S. News & World Report
Steve Chapman, columnist and editorial writer for the Chicago Tribune Columnist
Former National Journal reporter Bruce Stokes, husband of Biden nominee Deputy Secretary of State Wendy R. Sherman, who also participated in a China trip organized by the China-United States Exchange Foundation
Craig Gilbert, Washington bureau chief of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
Shikha Dalmia, a columnist for the weekly news magazine The Week
Catherine Rampell, a columnist for The Washington Post, wrote at the bottom of two articles, “U.S. and China vie for second place” and “Olympics give China a second chance at human rights reform,” that “My trip was paid for by the China-U.S. Exchange Foundation, a Hong Kong-based nonprofit organization that aims to improve Americans’ understanding of China.”
Getting paid to propagate on behalf of the Chinese Communist Party?
While the number of Western journalists mentioned above is small – a small fraction of those who participated in the China trip – the impact of the stories they wrote is clear.
Damia, a columnist for the weekly news magazine The Week who took the trip, wrote an op-ed entitled “China Bashing is for Losers” in the same year he traveled to China.
New York Times reporter Bradford Plumer also wrote a piece entitled “China’s ambitious plan to limit carbon emissions, (explained), which stands up for the Communist Party’s carbon emissions plan.
Former National Journal reporter Bruce Stokes, husband of Biden’s deputy secretary of state Wendy R. Sherman, shared articles warning that “decoupling” from China would be “counterproductive.
Washington Post columnist Catherine Rampell wrote an op-ed, “Opinion: Team Trump should be careful what it wishes for on China. China.
Ezra Klein, co-founder of the media outlet Vox and a New York Times columnist, seemed to praise the Communist Party’s control of the outbreak, tweeting, “I keep hearing that China is buying us some real time while our government wastes it on doing nothing and downplaying the threat.”
Fellow Vox co-founder Matthew Yglesias also tweeted, “Moody’s, Standard & Poor’s and the People’s Bank of China should just run the U.S. government.” At the time of the trip to China, Yglesias was a member of the Center For American Progress, the lair of many members of the Biden White House, and Stacey Abrams, the first black female candidate for governor in the United States, is on the board of the Center For American Progress.
Similarly, Steve Chapman, a columnist and editorial writer for the Chicago Tribune Columnist, tweeted a crusade against Trump’s trade war saying, “China may have a terrible human rights record, but you don’t have to take your shoes off for airport security.” Chapman also wrote a now-deleted article outlining “reasons to buy U.S. Olympic apparel from China.
Ronald Brownstein, CNN’s senior political analyst and senior editor of The Atlantic, also helped the Chinese Communist Party by pushing back against Trump’s criticism of the Communist Party and the WHO’s handling of the Chinese virus.
More importantly, Marilyn Geewax used her credentials at National Public Radio to become a visiting professor at the School of Global Business Journalism hosted by Xi Jinping’s alma mater, Tsinghua University.
All roads lead to Biden
In addition to the presence of Biden’s deputy secretary of state husband on the list, the journalist on the list, Clemons, also received praise from Biden.
Clemons, currently a contributor to Microsoft National Broadcasting Company (MSNBC) and a contributing editor to The Hill, was a member of the press corps covering Vice President Biden’s visit to China in 2013.
Biden told then-Vice President Li Yuanchao that Clemons was a “very important person” and that “you should talk to him.
Li Yuanchao looked at Clemons and said in deep, halting, but distinctive English, “Vice President Biden is a good friend of yours and mine.”
Clemons also wrote that “Biden understands China” and tweeted about a “new global order” with China as an “anchor point.” He said the Shanghai Expo was a tremendous, worthwhile effort, showcasing the new global order taking shape in 37-degree Celsius heat, with China as the new anchor point.
