The U.S. Navy recently announced on its official website that the captain of the Seventh Fleet Burke-class S.S. Destroyer USS Mustin DDG 89 “crossed his feet” to monitor the Chinese A photo of the aircraft carrier USS Liaoning has attracted international attention. Photos taken by the European Space Agency’s Earth observation satellite Sentinel-2 show at least three U.S. Burke-class destroyers watching the Liaoning, one on the left, one on the right, and one on the rear of the ship.

Foreign netizens obtained the satellite photo from the Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) database, which shows the location of the Liaoning and five other escort ships southwest of Macclesfield Bank in the Zhongsha Atoll, and shows that at least three Burke-class destroyers were dispatched by the U.S. military to monitor the Liaoning’s formation. They were deployed in close proximity to the Liaoning.

The U.S. has not officially released information on the names of the other two destroyers, whether there are other U.S. submarines underwater, or what kind of surveillance aircraft are in the air.

The Seventh Fleet currently has seven Burke-class missile destroyers deployed at Yokosuka, Japan, including USS Milius DDG-69, USS Barry DDG-52, USS Curtis Wilbur DDG-54, USS Benfold DDG-69, and USS Milius DDG-69. USS Benfold DDG-69, USS John S. McCain DDG-56, and the newest and most advanced USS Rafael Peralta DDG 115, which was inducted in February and is equipped with enhanced air defense, surface and submarine defense. The USS Rafael Peralta DDG 115 is equipped with the latest Aegis Baseline 9 system, which enhances air defense, surface and underwater warfare capabilities.

Earlier this month, the Liaoning crossed the Miyako Strait southward into the western Pacific and conducted exercises outside Taiwan, attracting attention from all sides, including the U.S. and Japanese ships, as well as Western media. After the Liaoning was reported to have stopped at sea with a suspected malfunction, a photo of a Japanese warship following the Liaoning was also circulated on the Internet, and the image once again went viral.
