RTHK editor-director Yvonne Choi reports on alleged police misconduct, and her work “Clanging Collection – Who Owns the Truth about 7.21” won several news awards. She was charged with knowingly making a false statement when she checked “other matters relating to traffic and transport” on an application form for the purpose of investigating vehicle license plate information. The case was decided on Thursday, with Tsai Yuling convicted on two counts. The magistrate said the fines were appropriate, $3,000 for each charge, or $6,000 in total.
The judge said it was not important whether the defendant had a “good motive” to obtain the information, but whether the defendant’s statements were “false”. The judge also did not agree that the vehicle involved in the transport of weapons, is related to traffic.
The court was attended by members of the RTHK Production Staff Union in black today, and a banner with the words “No Fear, No Fear, No Selfishness, Defend Freedom of the Press” was pulled up in solidarity with the public.
The “7.21 Who Owns the Truth” has won the Golden Yao Yu Press Freedom Award. RTHK said it had withdrawn from nomination for the award and would not send a member to receive the award.
