The central African country of Chad (Chad in Taiwan) has undergone a dramatic change in recent days, with President Deby (also Deby), who has been in power for 30 years, succumbing to his wounds on Tuesday (20) after fighting with rebels, and his son Mahamat has been appointed interim president, but the country fears a period of turmoil.
The last time Chad was mentioned in the Chinese-language media was probably when it was involved in the case of former Hong Kong Home Affairs Bureau chief Patrick Ho Chi-ping. According to Gadio, a former Senegalese foreign minister who later became a tainted witness, Ho met with Gadio in New York in October 2014 and then, through Gadio’s assistance, offered Deby a “gift box” containing $2 million in cash in exchange for oil exploration rights in Chad.
Looking back on Deby’s political career, Chinese people will actually have a sense of “déjà vu”. Deby, who came to power after a successful coup in 1990, was able to push through a new constitution in 2018 that will keep him in power until 2033. In the election results announced on Monday (19), Deby claimed to have won his sixth term as president with 79 percent of the vote. However, his predatory management of Chad’s oil wealth, coupled with a crackdown on opponents, has left Deby facing a high level of public discontent.
It is said that our Emperor Xi also wants to stay in power until at least 2035. Deby was born on June 18, 1952, and Xi was born on June 15, 1953, just one year apart in age, and only three days apart in birthday. What will Emperor Xi think when Debi gets this?
