China’s trade with North Korea will resume freight train service next month after the border between the two countries was closed for 15 months, Reuters disclosed on April 21, citing people familiar with the matter.
A transport company in charge of cross-border trade told Reuters on Wednesday that the bridge across the Yalu River, linking Dandong with Sinuiju in North Korea, will be partially reopened for freight train service “sometime around May 1. But no date has been set for the resumption of passenger service, as North Korea is still concerned about the new crown epidemic and China has severely restricted the entry of people.
Another source told Yonhap News Agency that North Korea and China were scheduled to resume rail transport trade around April 15, but the launch was postponed to early May due to insufficient conditions. The Chinese side is now ready and is waiting for the decision of the North.
The report said that the North Korean leader Kim Jong-un issued a lot of spare supplies to the society to commemorate the “Sun Festival”, and the restart of railroad transportation between the two countries may be a response to the lack of supplies in the North.
