Former U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo speaks at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Florida on Feb. 27, 2021.
Former U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Wednesday (April 21) that he believes the Chinese Communist Party has no intention of fulfilling any of the commitments made at the climate summit.
The White House will hold a two-day video summit of climate change leaders starting Thursday, the first meeting between the U.S. and Chinese leaders since Communist Party leader Xi Jinping will also be in attendance, and despite the lack of any bilateral talks, there is still extra interest.
In response, Pompeo warned on Wednesday night’s “Fox Business Tonight” program. He said that past experience shows that the Chinese Communist Party will never be willing to fulfill any of its commitments at the summit, and that it must be watched continuously.
“I predict that the Chinese Communist Party will repeat the same old story, which is to offer a series of promises that they never intend to keep,” Pompeo said, adding that “they have broken more promises over the years, including a promise to President Obama that they would not militarize the South China Sea.”
“We need to see real action. I don’t know exactly what Xi Jinping will say tomorrow, but America’s security, America’s prosperity, depends on monitoring what the Chinese actually do, not what they say at summits or slogans that they have no intention of actually implementing.”
Pompeo also reminded the Biden administration that it must “practice what it preaches” in the face of the Chinese Communist Party in order to maintain U.S. deterrence.
He said, “One thing we (the Trump administration) are careful about is that we don’t make promises, we don’t make threats (statements) that we’re not prepared to carry out or make good on.”
“We’ve been careful in our words and bold in our actions,” Pompeo said, “and I hope that this administration doesn’t subvert that. Once these adversaries find out that we are making promises that we are not prepared to support, they will become unconcerned.”
“Appeasement only brings war, and strength comes from having the ability to deter, and that’s because countries understand that when (U.S.) leaders speak, they will do what they say.”
Pompeo said, “I would hope that the Chinese Communist Party would reverse its course of pollution, but there is no reason to believe that this is indeed the case.”
