According to a recent report on Business Insider, Chris Cuomo, the host of CNN and brother of New York’s governor, publicly stated that the U.S. will not push for police reform until “white kids start getting killed. This statement immediately sparked controversy.
On CNN last Saturday (April 17), Cuomo discussed how to push for reform of the U.S. police system after the police shootings of African-American man Daunte Wright and Hispanic boy Adam Toledo. He also addressed topics such as the trial of the case against Officer Derek Chauvin, the accused officer in the Floyd case.
Cuomo said on the show that after people of color were killed by police, many white people pointed out the prior criminal behavior of the victims. White people are “trying to leave the problem to people of color, not to challenge the police. He went on to say that reform of the U.S. police system will only happen if police violence has the same impact on white youth as it does on youth of color.
He even claimed that he himself knows when white people will change, and that is “when white kids start getting killed.
The report noted that viewers had mixed feelings about Cuomo’s comments, with some saying he hit the nail on the head and others saying he clearly misspoke. Others argued that he was suggesting that white children must die in order to push for police system reform.
