Two federal senators from Ohio recently introduced a bipartisan bill to protect American workers against the Communist Party’s “unfair trade policies. They say it’s time to stand up to the Chinese Communist Party because today it’s the U.S. steel industry that is suffering, and tomorrow it could be other industries.
Republican Senator Rob Portman (R-OH) and Democratic Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) added the Eliminating Global Market Distortions (EMD) to the Protect American Jobs Act in order to stop the Chinese Communist Party’s “unfair trade policies. Distortions) to the Protect American Jobs Act to counter Beijing’s trade policies. They said at a news conference that strengthening U.S. laws would give them “effective tools” to fight Beijing.
The two lawmakers said the bill would protect important industries in Ohio. The bill introduces a new concept of using “multiple, successive investigations” to effectively balance the “repeat offenders and serious cheaters” in U.S. trade, thus protecting American workers. “to protect American workers.
The bill would also prevent the creation of steel overcapacity and keep U.S. steelworkers and mills from losing competitiveness. Over the past decade or so, the CCP has created large state-run enterprises in several industries, such as aluminum, steel and solar panels. These are all industries that have grown with subsidies from the Chinese government.
Former U.S. President Donald Trump sanctioned many Chinese companies with tariffs to counter the unfair trade policies of the Chinese Communist Party, leading to a “trade war” between the U.S. and China. In January 2020, the U.S. and China signed the first phase of a trade agreement that requires China to purchase an additional $200 billion in goods and services from the U.S. in 2020 and 2021, compared to 2017 levels. But reports in February of this year (2021) showed that China had purchased only 57 percent of what it had committed to.
For decades, unfair trade practices by the Chinese Communist Party have cost the U.S. countless jobs and hurt our economy,” Berman tweeted. It’s time for us to take action to protect jobs and confront the CCP, especially in industries that are important to Ohio and the nation.”
Portman said the bill would strengthen U.S. anti-dumping and countervailing duty laws to protect American workers by challenging China’s trade policies that defy global markets. 20 years ago, China accounted for only 18 percent of global steel production; now it is 50 percent. The Chinese Communist Party is using the low prices caused by government subsidies to force its way into the international steel market.
Today it’s the steel industry, but tomorrow it could be electric cars or semiconductors,” he said. And it’s all global market domination caused by the Chinese (Communist) state interfering with free trade by subsidizing their companies, and it’s American jobs that are paying the price.”
Brown said in a statement that “trade fraud” has blocked many of Ohio’s factories, put our residents out of work and distorted markets, and that “this bipartisan bill will strengthen our Trade Remedies Act, give America clear tools to fight these harmful operations, and will Help Ohio workers keep their jobs.
The bill was praised by Kevin Dempsey, president and CEO of the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI). He said the bill is a step in the right direction and will promote a more level playing field for the U.S. industry and will give Americans confidence that their government “has the tools to fight for a level playing field for American workers.
