Intel crossed the wafer foundry Zhang Zhongmou: looking for investment was rejected today is very ironic

TSMC founder Chang Chung-Mou said in response to semiconductor major Intel’s (Intel) announcement to cross over to wafer manufacturing services, TSMC once unsuccessfully sought Intel’s investment, Intel believes that wafer manufacturing services do not do much, “at that time, the other side is also a little bit look down on”, the development of the industry today, they feel quite ironic.

The Central News Agency reported that Zhang Zhongmou was invited to attend the 2021 Master Think Tank Forum today, and his speech cherished the advantages of Taiwan’s semiconductor wafer manufacturing. Zhang Zhongmou made his first comments on Intel’s announcement to cross over to wafer manufacturing services.

Zhang Zhongmou said that Intel is the world’s semiconductor industry for decades of domination, Intel previously thought that wafer manufacturing services do not do much, TSMC was established before the fund-raising, had sought investment from Intel, but Intel does not invest, “at that time, the other party is also a little look down on”.

Zhang Zhongmou said that Intel did not expect the business model of wafer manufacturing services would become so important, and one day also to do, feel quite ironic.

There are many reasons for the global chip shortage. Last year, automakers temporarily shut down factories due to the Communist virus (COVID-19) epidemic and began competing with the consumer electronics industry for chips after resuming work. It prompted Intel to announce in March that it plans to start producing its own chips within the next six to nine months and build new factories in the U.S. and Europe for use by the auto industry.

Zhang Zhongmou was interviewed in 2016 and mentioned that in recent years Intel and Samsung have declared to cross over to the foundry industry, Intel just put its foot in the pool to test the water temperature, “I believe Intel will find the pool very cold.”

Zhang Zhongmou said, TSMC is the world’s first specialized foundry, so far the development of 30 years, although there are many manufacturers want to enter the specialized foundry, but Intel, and even Samsung, are not specialized foundry.

In addition, TSMC April 15 online corporate briefing, released a lot of positive messages, raise this year’s operating growth target and capital expenditure, for automotive chip supply, TSMC President Wei Zhejia expected that the next 18 months supply chain will remain tight state.

TSMC plans to invest $100 billion in the 3 years from 2021 to 2023 to increase production capacity, support the manufacturing and R&D of leading technologies, and do all it can to solve the challenges facing chip supply for customers and support the global automotive industry, which is expected to improve productivity, and the shortage of automotive semiconductor components for customers is expected to improve significantly in the 3rd quarter.

As for the competition with Intel (Intel), Wei said that Intel is an important customer of TSMC, although there is competition in some areas, TSMC will continue to maintain the three competitive advantages of technology leadership, manufacturing excellence and customer trust.
