Recently, Amtrak said that it plans to build a new high-speed rail line from Los Angeles to Las Vegas.

The press release states that the construction will be funded by the $80 billion allocated for rail transportation in the American Jobs Plan launched by the Biden administration in late March.

In addition, reports indicate that the funds may also be provided to Brightline Rail, a private company headquartered in Miami, Florida, to help build the rail line.

In fact, for more than 20 years, there have been calls to build a high-speed rail line from Southern California to Las Vegas, but plans have been halted several times due to funding problems.

Although developers believe that the construction of a high-speed rail link between the two places will reduce traffic congestion, there are still people and industry insiders who are skeptical.

Randal O’Toole, a senior researcher at the Cato Institute, pointed out that there are currently four bus companies and eight different airlines that provide service between the two places, with travel times ranging from more than 70 minutes to more than five hours, and fares as low as $20 or so.

Therefore, with such fierce competition in the market, O’Toole is not optimistic about this yet-to-be-built rail line.

In addition, the route not only involves right-of-way issues, if the high-speed rail will run along the 15 freeway separation island, later may face the highway can no longer widen the problem.
