European football 12 giants will form their own league, France is rumored to join at least 2 teams

Twelve of the biggest teams in European soccer announced yesterday that they will form their own “super league”. A source told AFP today that at least two teams in France are scheduled to participate each year, but the source did not say which teams or how they will be selected.

The 12 founding teams of the Super League include the Premier League’s “big six” Manchester City, Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur; La Liga’s Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid; and Serie A’s AC Milan, Inter Milan and Juventus. The absence of Bundesliga and Ligue 1 teams is striking.

However, it is understood that three other teams will join the founding teams and another five teams will qualify each year, so there will be 20 teams playing together, possibly including the Premier League champions.

Bundesliga chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke has insisted that both Dortmund and Bayern Munich are opposed to the plan to set up their own teams.

Both Bundesliga teams are members of the executive board of the European Club Association (ECA). The European Club Association said yesterday that it was “strongly opposed” to the Super League project.
