Former African-American police officer on the run for killing 3 in Texas shooting

Stephen Broderick, an African-American former police officer, shot and killed three people at an apartment complex in Austin, Texas, and is being sought by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and a police strike team.

Witness Brenda Torres said she was driving when she saw a young boy waving for a car on the street and then saw an African-American man on the ground; she thought he had just passed out, but as she continued to drive, police cars roared by one after another.

Austin-Travis County Emergency Services (EMS) said only three adults were reported shot and killed; an EMS spokesman said the first 911 call came in at 11:44 a.m. on the 18th.

Acting Austin Police Chief Joseph Chacon said the three were not shot inside the building, but did not give details; he said the suspect may be hiding somewhere in the apartment building, waiting for police to leave, and urged residents to be on the lookout as police and the FBI continue to look for the killer.

The 41-year-old Broderick, a former criminal investigator for the Travis County Sheriff’s Office, was arrested and charged with child molestation in June and resigned after an administrative suspension, said Kristen Dark, a spokeswoman for the police department.

Chacon said the incident was a family tragedy and that Broderick is suspected of killing two Hispanic women and an African-American male who was known to the victims. But police have not stated a motive for the crime.
