Shaanxi rights lawyer Chang Wei Ping, who was involved in the “Xiamen party case,” has been formally arrested on suspicion of “subversion of state power” and is currently detained in a detention center far from Baoji City. Family members have denounced the authorities’ abuse of power. Yu Wensheng, a lawyer sentenced to prison for “subversion,” disclosed for the first time that he had been subjected to violence in prison.
The Public Security Bureau of Baoji City, Shaanxi Province, recently issued an arrest notice for lawyer Chang Weiping on suspicion of “subversion of state power,” and he is currently being held in Feng County Detention Center.
Chen Zijuan, the wife of Chang Wei Ping, issued a statement saying that Chang Wei Ping has not committed any crime, let alone subversion of state power, and that the Baoji Public Security Bureau and the Public Prosecutor’s Office are suspected of abusing their power, demanding her husband’s immediate release.
Chen criticized the off-site detention of Chang Wei-ping in the Feng County Detention Center, which is located in the inaccessible Qinling Mountains, as an abuse of power and an act of revenge, and will file a lawsuit. She is extremely angry with the local judicial authorities for their recklessness and demands that the mistake be corrected immediately.
Hunan lawyer Xie Yang, who is concerned about the case, also believes that the Baoji authorities’ handling of the case is suspected of being illegal.
Xie Yang: “If his attention is once reduced, it is certainly very dangerous. Such cases are different from general criminal cases. General criminal cases may be looked at within the general legal framework. Once it comes to subversion of state power, there are often no legal provisions, all the legal provisions are invalid. They will do whatever they think they will do.”
Chang Wei-ping met with a number of rights activists in Xiamen in December 2019 to discuss current affairs, and was placed under residential surveillance until January last year on suspicion of subversion of state power, before being released on bail pending trial. He later uploaded a video revealing that he was tortured while under surveillance.
Yu Wensheng, a human rights lawyer who was sentenced to four years in prison for “subversion of state power,” has been under scrutiny for his treatment in prison and his health condition.
When his wife, Xu Yan, visited him in Nanjing prison last week, she learned for the first time from her husband that he had been subjected to violence in prison.
Xu Yan: “When he first arrived in Nanjing, he was beaten by a group of people who beat him and kicked him, and he was a bit confused. It was very bad. I ask the Nanjing prison authorities and the leaders of the relevant departments to investigate and hold accountable the people who beat him, including whether someone directed them to do so. “
Family members have long suspected that Yu Wensheng was tortured and abused while in custody. Currently, his right hand has serious sequelae, even writing, brushing teeth, clamping dishes can not be carried out, recently the prison authorities arranged for him to go to the hospital for examination.
Xu Yan: “He was examined by orthopedics and neurosurgery, and the final result was that his hand was damaged by trauma and nerve damage, and he was prescribed a medicine. At first it was the right hand, but on March 15 there was a more serious situation, he said his left hand also began to tremble. “
Nanjing prison to prevent the epidemic, originally arranged for family visits once every two months, but Xu Yan believes that the prison should not use the epidemic as an excuse to deprive the right to visit, insisted that the law every month to visit Yu Wensheng.
