The United States, Japan and Australia will cooperate to lay new submarine cables in the Pacific to strengthen global digital infrastructure and enhance information sharing on China’s movements to counter the Chinese Communist Party.

Japan’s Yomiuri Shimbun reports that submarine cable equipment is an important infrastructure for security and safety, and there is a risk that intelligence and information will be intercepted or blocked, so the U.S., Japan and Australia will work together to lay submarine cables for international communications to counter the Chinese Communist Party. The United States, Japan and Australia with official financial institutions will contribute to support the new laying of submarine cable plans.

The U.S., Japanese and Australian governments and related companies held an informal meeting in March, where participants agreed that cooperation on submarine cables must be strengthened. The meeting discussed how to strengthen the sharing of information about the movement of the Chinese Communist Party, and proposed a cooperation plan to jointly fund the construction of submarine cables in strategically important areas.

The report said that the reason why the United States, Japan and Australia to strengthen cooperation in the field of submarine cables, mainly because of the rise of the power of the Chinese Communist Party. The U.S., Japan and Europe account for 90 percent of the share of submarine cables, but the Chinese Communist Party’s Huawei Technologies’ Huahai Communication Technology Company ranks No. 4 in the world, increasing its presence.

The Chinese Communist Party has been expanding its influence through economic cooperation and assistance, especially in the Pacific islands with which Taiwan has friendly relations, by installing submarine cables everywhere under the “One Belt, One Road” concept of a huge economic circle. Chinese companies are also attempting to win the submarine cable business.

The Chinese companies are generally believed to have the financial backing of the Communist government behind their low bids. In the future, the official financial institutions of the U.S., Japan and Australia will support the plan to lay the submarine cable.

In January this year, Palau, one of the Pacific Island countries, concluded a contract with the United States and other countries to lay a submarine cable, and the bid was awarded to NEC, a Japanese company. In addition to Japan’s Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC), the U.S. and Australia’s official agencies are also financing the project.

NEC said that the latest submarine cable system can transmit the data volume of about 10,000 DVDs per second.
