Japanese journalist arrested by Myanmar Tokyo demands release

Japan has asked Myanmar to release the Japanese journalists arrested in Yangon. At least 65 journalists have been arrested since a coup by the Burmese military.

A coup by the Burmese military and the arrest of civilian leader Ung San Suu Kyi have sparked a wave of civil protests. The military has expanded the scale of the sweep to combat opposition forces.

Japanese media reported that Burmese authorities arrested Japanese journalist Hiroki Kitakata yesterday for his activities in Yangon. Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Kato Katsushin confirmed today that a Japanese journalist was arrested and asked the Burmese authorities to release him as soon as possible.

The Japanese journalist has not yet been charged, and Japanese diplomats are trying to find a way to visit him in prison.
