French President Macron calls for “clear red lines” against Russia

French President Emmanuel Macron said in an interview with the CBS television network that the international community should draw a “clear red line” against Russia and consider possible sanctions if Russia crosses it.

Reuters reported that Macron said in the interview, which aired on Sunday, that “we have to draw a clear red line with Russia, that’s the only way we can build credibility. Macron said that “sanctions are not enough by themselves, but they are part of an overall package.”

Macron also said in an interview with U.S. media that he agreed with U.S. President Joe Biden’s proposal to open a dialogue approach with Russian President Vladimir Putin at a time of worsening tensions.

According to Reuters, Macron’s remarks were a “departure” from France’s original stance on Russia, moving closer to its ally, the United States.

Macron, elected president in 2017, has been trying to reduce the distrust between Russia and the West, hoping to use Russia to solve the world’s most difficult issues.

And recently U.S.-Russia tensions have reached their highest point since the end of the Cold War in 1989. The U.S. imposed a series of sanctions on Russia last week and expelled 10 Russian diplomats. Russia returned the favor by ordering 10 U.S. diplomats to leave the country and advising the U.S. ambassador to return to his home country.

In Europe, relations between Europe and Russia have tightened due to the large number of Russian troops sent to the Russian-Ukrainian border.
