The Democratic left in the United States recently introduced a bill to fill the high court with four additional Democratic justices. Tennessee U.S. Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) condemned the move on Saturday, April 17, arguing that the bill is the same as President Joe Biden’s proposal to create a 36-member commission to review the Supreme Court for reform, and is essentially an attempt to win liberal super-legislative power on the Supreme Court.
According to FoxNews.com, the left has been calling for the Supreme Court to be stuffed during the 2020 election. They claim that the addition of three conservative justices to the Supreme Court in one fell swoop during former President Donald Trump’s presidency has upset the balance of power on the Supreme Court. However, this demand of theirs has been opposed by Republicans. Republicans see it as politicizing the U.S. Supreme Court.
Biden suggested last week the formation of a 36-member cross-party commission to audit the U.S. Supreme Court. The main targets of the review would be the size of the Supreme Court and the tenure of judges, among other issues. The commission would be required to submit a report on Supreme Court reform six months after its formation and make recommendations on Supreme Court reform.
Democratic Congressman Ed Markey of New York, Democratic Congressman Mondaire Jones of New York and Democratic Congressman Hank Johnson of Georgia co-sponsored the Judiciary Act of 2021 on Thursday (April 15), which calls for increasing the number of justices on the U.S. Supreme Court from the current nine to 13.
In response, Blackburn said the bill mirrors the committee’s recommendations made by Biden. She said, “I think they’re trying to secretly achieve filling the high court, and in fact they’re already playing that hand in terms of pushing other policies.”
She cited the left-wing administration’s push for the Green New Deal proposed by AOC (Alexandria Ocasio Cortez), which was included in Biden’s infrastructure bill and is being pushed under the pretext of rebuilding America’s highways and bridges as a pretext to push this policy.
Blackburn said, “This is a left-wing policy strategy, and the progressives aim to give the Democrats a super legislative majority on the Supreme Court by filling it with liberal justices.”
She also criticized the progressives’ U.S. push to add two states to the United States, eliminate the U.S. Electoral College policy and put the federal government in control of U.S. elections, among other policies. He argued that these are policies that Democrats are proposing to make up for knowing that their policies are unpopular and will cause them to lose in the 2022 midterm elections as a result.
Blackburn said she would not support any law that would politicize the courts.
The report also mentioned that Markey’s proposal to add four high court justices was opposed not only by Republican lawmakers, but also by Biden and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.). Biden just announced last week that he wants to adopt a committee to decide how to reform the U.S. Supreme Court, while Pelosi said straight away that she is not willing to discuss the bill in the House.
