CDC: 5,800 people in the United States were fully vaccinated and then reinfected with the virus. 74 people died.

The CDC says it has found at least 5,800 people across the United States who have been fully vaccinated and then re-infected. Of those, 396 required hospitalization and 74 died.

Nearly 60 percent of those who “broke the vaccine” barrier and became reinfected were under the age of 60, said CDC Director Rochelle Walensky, adding that these cases do not include those who became infected within two weeks of being fully vaccinated, or those who became infected with only one dose of the vaccine.

As of April 15, 78 million people in the U.S. had been fully vaccinated.

More people in the U.S. may be hesitant about vaccines after Johnson & Johnson vaccine suspension

The federal government’s recent proposal to suspend the Johnson & Johnson vaccine may make more people hesitant to administer the vaccine, health officials said.

The CDC, using data from the U.S. Census Bureau, found that hesitation to vaccinate is currently as high as about 30 percent in U.S. states such as Wyoming and North Dakota, and as low as less than 10 percent in Massachusetts and Vermont.

And while hesitation rates are mostly below 20% in large, densely populated cities such as Los Angeles, New York and Chicago, minority communities, there has been an upward trend.

U.S. Epidemic Remains Serious Michigan Ward Capacity Worrisome

In the past month, new cases of the CCHD virus in the U.S. have risen by 30% overall, with a surge in hospitalizations testing the capacity of the health care system in Michigan, where the outbreak has rebounded most severely.

CNN reports that Beaumont Health system, Michigan’s largest health system, now has more than 800 patients infected with the disease, an increase of 300 in just two weeks. At least 24 hospitals have a 90 percent occupancy rate in their wards.

While overall, 85 percent are no worse off financially, 29 percent of those earning less than the federal poverty line believe they are getting poorer.
