Japan’s prime minister visits White House, Biden not show up, sends Harris out to welcome him

The National Archives reported Friday (April 17) that Kamala Harris welcomed Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga to the White House this week, as Joe Biden continued to shy away from public appearances with world leaders, delegating presidential duties to Harris.

Harris said, “It is now my great pleasure to welcome the Prime Minister of Japan and to thank him for this visit, the first time a world leader has visited the United States since we took office. The president and I are very excited about the dialogue that we will have with the prime minister of Japan.”

Harris added, “As you know, Mr. Prime Minister, just a month ago at the four-nation summit, the United States had a broad dialogue with our allies, Japan, with Australia, and with India, to work together around some of the biggest challenges facing our world.”

For months, Vice President Harris has been taking calls from world leaders, while Biden has been leaving work early for bed at 7 p.m. Harris first spoke with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Feb. 2 and just had an extensive phone conversation with French President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday “and expressed her commitment to strengthening the bilateral relationship between the United States and France and to revitalizing the transatlantic alliance.” Harris also “thanked President Macron for his leadership on gender issues and for France’s dedication to NASA’s Perseverance rover, which explored Mars last year.

It is unclear whether Biden’s early bedtime of 7 p.m., as revealed by CNN, may have been the reason. Previously CNN reported that Biden’s schedule is unique among presidents. He starts work at 8 a.m., stops at 7 p.m. and goes to bed shortly thereafter.
