Cuban leader Raúl announced Friday that he is resigning as first secretary of the Central Committee of the Cuban Communist Party.
The move by Raul, 89, marks the first time in some 60 years of Cuban Communist Party rule that the party is not led by the Castro brothers. Raul is the brother of the late Cuban leader Castro.
Born in 1931, Raul studied economics at a university in the capital, Havana, before joining the Communist Party’s Junior League. He helped his brother Castro plan an attack on a military camp in 1953 and was sentenced to 13 years in prison after the failed operation, but was pardoned in 1955 and went into exile in Mexico, where he became friends with revolutionary Jeguera.
Castro led the Cuban Revolution in 1959, with Raul as one of the commanders, and the two brothers, with the help of Teguela, were able to overthrow the U.S.-funded regime.
