On Thursday, April 15, the Washington Examiner reported that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has shelved a proposal by Democratic lawmakers to add four more high court justices, saying the matter is up to President Biden.
Pelosi said the House will not vote on the Judiciary Committee’s proposal to add four justices to the U.S. Supreme Court.
When asked by reporters whether Pelosi would take up House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler’s (D-N.Y.) proposal to increase the number of Supreme Court justices to 13 that day, Pelosi replied unequivocally, “No, I have no plans to bring it to the floor for discussion.”
Pelosi then kicked the ball to Biden. It’s still up to Biden to decide, she said, “Biden recently signed an executive order establishing a commission to look specifically at the issues and feasibility associated with populating the courts.”
Pelosi added, “I don’t know if this is a good idea or a bad idea, but I think it’s an idea that should be considered.
Media analysis shows that Democrats want to weaken the influence of the three conservative justices appointed by Trump by adding justices appointed by Biden. Republicans, on the other hand, say, “Democrats are launching an all-out assault on the independence of the federal judiciary.”
As a counterattack, six Republican lawmakers have announced they will propose a constitutional amendment to keep the number of Supreme Court justices at nine. That number has remained unchanged since 1869.
Republican U.S. Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Texas) said, “Filling the Supreme Court would destroy the Supreme Court. Democrats will do anything for power.”
Republicans also predicted that the move to “stuff the high court” would prove unpopular and serve to help Republicans win in the midterm elections.
