Sweden’s 5G construction excludes Huawei, ZTE, Chinese embassy responds

According to the website of the Chinese Embassy in Sweden, some people in Sweden have been speculating for some time about the so-called “national security threat” posed by the equipment of Huawei, ZTE and other Chinese enterprises, but they have not been able to provide any real evidence. Over the years, Huawei, ZTE and other Chinese enterprises have actively promoted Sino-Swedish ICT cooperation and made positive contributions to the construction of relevant infrastructure in Sweden, and have never posed any “threat” to Sweden’s national security.

We firmly oppose the abuse of the concept of “national security” to exclude specific enterprises from specific countries, to suppress Chinese enterprises and to artificially block cooperation without any factual basis or solid evidence, in violation of the laws of the market and the principle of fair competition.

We urge the Swedish government to follow the market principles of open development and fair competition, review the relevant decisions, and provide an open, fair, equitable and non-discriminatory business environment for Chinese enterprises, in order to maintain mutual openness.

Sweden announces ban on Huawei, ZTE equipment for companies participating in 5G spectrum auction

Reuters has just reported that Sweden’s Postal and Telecommunications Service (PTS) on 20 January banned Chinese technology companies Huawei and ZTE equipment from participating in its 5G spectrum auction to be held next month.

PTS said that companies participating in the auction must be in 2025 before January 1, Huawei and ZTE equipment from the existing “core functions” to delete. According to Reuters, “core functionality” refers to the equipment that builds the wireless access network, the transmission network, the core network and the service and maintenance of that network. The report mentions that Huawei and ZTE have yet to respond to the Swedish decision.

According to the report, the Swedish Postal and Telecommunications Authority said the decision was made after an evaluation by the Swedish Armed Forces and the Swedish Security Service.

The report mentions that the authority has approved the participation of four companies – Hi3G Access, Net4Mobility, Telia Sverige and Teracom – in the planned spectrum auction.

A Chinese foreign ministry spokesman has stressed that Huawei is an independently developed Chinese private company that has developed good cooperation with many countries around the world, and that we have not heard of any country having security problems as a result of its cooperation with Huawei. The Chinese Government has always encouraged Chinese enterprises to conduct foreign economic cooperation on the basis of international rules and local laws, and we hope that the countries concerned will provide a fair, transparent and equitable environment for Chinese enterprises to invest, operate and cooperate with each other, and will refrain from creating unnecessary artificial obstacles to the normal operation of Chinese enterprises for other purposes.
