Chinese rights lawyer Zhisheng Gao has been “forcibly disappeared” by Chinese authorities for 1,140 days, and the authorities are not telling his family anything. Geng Zhisheng’s wife in the United States recently received news that public security officials in Shaanxi Province have refused to allow family members to meet with her, citing tensions between China and the United States. Suspecting that her husband had been brutally murdered to death, Geng issued a statement on March 14 asking Beijing to grant her a visa on humanitarian grounds, determined to return to China and join her husband in prison.
With no news of her husband, Gao Zhisheng, and his fate unknown, Geng He issued a statement on April 14, saying that at the time her husband was forcibly disappeared for 1,139 days, she “had reason to suspect that Gao Zhisheng had died in illegal detention by the Chinese Communist Party, or else she would have dodged and excused herself from giving her family a clear indication of where he was, and would not have been allowed to meet or return home. …… No phone ……” To this end, Geng and the following statement: “If Zhisheng Gao did die as a result, I request the Chinese Communist Party to return Zhisheng Gao’s ashes for humanitarian reasons.”
Geng He declared, “I myself have raised my second child and am determined to return to China and join my husband in prison, and request that the Chinese Embassy issue me a visa to enter China in accordance with the U.S.-China Consular Agreement.”
Geng and declared that she would never give up on meeting with Gao Zhisheng “to see him alive and to see him dead.” If these two humble demands are not met, I will reserve the right to take the next step!”
Zhisheng Gao, a native of Jia County, Yulin City, Shaanxi Province, has been defending the rights of the underprivileged in China since 1996, representing people in many cases and suing local governments. He is known as “China’s conscience”, “a leading figure in the field of human rights lawyers”, “a pioneer in the human rights movement”, and “a leader in the awakening of national human rights awareness”.
According to Rights Defense Network, on December 22, 2006, Zhisheng Gao was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment and five years’ probation by the Beijing First Intermediate Court for “inciting subversion”; however, he continued to be under house arrest until August 7, 2014, when he was released from prison, and has been missing for 1,140 days since August 2017.
In 2016, he published a secretly written book, “2017, Rise Up China,” documenting his abduction, imprisonment, and torture by the Chinese Communist Party, predicting the defeat of the Chinese Communist Party, and offering his own vision for building a democratic modern China.
His wife, Geng He, fled to the United States in January 2009 with their children.
