30 Eggs I Have to Say About “Parasite” (with Spoilers)

I’m not done yet.

Sir is talking about “Parasite”.

Two brushes, three brushes, four brushes, the degree of shock, not less but more.

Did you really understand it with four brushes?

Sir dare not say.

But Sir dares to say–

Bong Joon-ho’s secret code, rich in detail and huge in information, is absolutely the key to the success of this movie.

For this reason, Sir repeatedly pulled the film, analyzed it, and collected all the currently available interviews and data to come up with the following 30 key eggs.

More than that, of course.

But enough to open a whole new Parasite.

What follows involves serious spoilers.

If you haven’t watched it, you can click on “Watching” and bookmark it; if you have, you can read it to your heart’s content.

1

Why are there six bells in the credits?

In the past, CJ E&M’s credits were filled with fireworks, but this time they were six chimes.

This is actually a test for cinema sound.

As Sir also mentioned in his last review, the best version of the movie is the panoramic sound version.

Don’t think this has nothing to do with the movie.

“If you find that the bells come out of the same place six times, it’s time to watch it in a different movie theater,” Bong Joon-ho said as much.

2

The mystery of the freeze frame in the opening minute?

The first minute of the film, in addition to the usual credits and actors’ names, has a big mystery hidden in it.

The freeze frame is for the audience to listen to the sound.

Ambient sounds are used to show the living environment of the Kim family.

Sounds come from all directions: car engines, bicycle bells, young men complaining in a laundromat, the noisy chatter of aunts outside, and lazy cat calls. ……

Listen carefully to the sound of footsteps coming from other homes above the basement.

The purpose of this is to show that the Kim family is located on the lowest level of the space.

3

Are there really no worms in Parasite?

Although Bong Joon-ho has said many times that there will be no parasites in Parasite, there are actually three times in the movie.

At the beginning, when Ki-taek (Song Kang-ho) is eating bread at home, a katydid (Zao katydid) crawls over the table and is flicked away by Ki-taek with a look of disgust.

The katydid, which is harmless but ugly, usually hides in the dark, signaling the beginning of the Kim family’s secret “parasitic” operation.

While the Kim family eats and drinks at the Park family’s house, Chung-sook (Jang Hyejin) jokes that Ki-taek, who has no plan, is like a cockroach that scatters and hides when the lights are off and on.

This line foretells Kizawa’s final fate.

The last time is most ironic.

After the kill, the fly rests on Wu’s finger.

Did you notice?

The worm appears only around the poor.

Although the movie doesn’t explicitly show the parasites, each appearance of the bugs reflects the ugliness and lowliness of the poor.

Just like that rainy night, the one who ran away was a man, but what you saw was a cockroach.

And the Jin family also goes through the sorrow of disliking the worms, discussing them, and eventually becoming worms.

4

Stones

The story begins with a stone.

Delivered as a gift to the Kim family, it is told by Ki-woo’s (Choi Woo-sik) friend, Ah-myung (Park Seo-joon), that the stone has the effect of increasing fortune.

The stone, the key prop throughout the movie, represents the desire to be among the elite.

It is the stone that gives Ki-woo the strength and courage to pick up the stone to smash the man who pees outside his house, or finally to use it to kill the family underground.

The most surreal scene in the movie, however, also features a stone.

Even after escaping from the submerged house, Kiyomo holds the stone in his hands and never lets go of it.

When Chizawa asked him why he had been holding the stone, he replied.

“It’s not that I’m holding it, it’s that it’s haunting me.”

Is that really the case?

This is a desire that is both unclear and indistinct.

Who is holding whom, who is clinging to whom.

When have we ever been able to tell the difference?

5

Stairs

In the opening scene, Chize tells Chiyou that the wifi is meant to be sucked upward, and Chize and Chizhen climb the stairs of their house to the bathroom to find the new wifi.

The implication-

To get the resources, you have to climb up the stairs.

When Kiyou entered the Park home and entered Tahui’s room to teach, you had to go up the stairs.

The staircase is not only a space divider in the Park family’s house, but also a tool for the Kim family to climb up the stairs.

Both director Bong Joon-ho and art director admitted in the interview that the choice of stairs was based on the classic of Korean film history, Kim Ki-young’s “The Next Girl”.

In Next Girl, the staircase is not only a setting that separates the woman from the man (also a symbol of wealth), but also a path to desire and a place for all tragedies.

△ △ Kim Ki-young “Next Girl

The same goes for The Parasite.

You will notice that most of the action of the Park family is moving upward.

The height and width of the steps also vary slightly. The rich man’s stairs can go up freely and gracefully, even with his dog, and are low and spacious.

The steps to the ground floor, on the other hand, are steep and high.

The Kim family is the opposite.

Except for the stairs going up after the invasion of the Park family, the rest of the scenes are almost all downward, most notably the heavy rain, where they keep descending the stairs from the highest floor of the mansion, symbolizing futility and drift.

This is what Bong Joon-ho specifically asked for.

6

What exactly is a Taiwanese ancient cake store?

The ancient Taiwanese bakery that both Keezer and Wuqinsei mentioned does exist in reality.

Korean tourists once had this freshly baked cake while traveling in Danshui, Taiwan, and found it cheap, fresh and delicious, with simple and healthy ingredients, so it was imported back to Korea.

Since Korean bread is not cheap, this cake became popular in Korea.

After the show became popular, it was revealed that the cakes were made with egg wash instead of real fresh eggs to control costs, which was a devastating blow to the bakery.

The reason why ‘Parasite’ has such a line is because it is a livelihood event that everyone in Korea understands, and also echoes the fact that the Kim family and the underground family are both upscale imposters.

7

What the hell is a “Ladon” (fried raccoon)?

On a rainy night at Park’s house, Yeon Jiao (Jo Joo Jin) calls Chung Sook ahead of time and says that her child wants to eat Japaguri (짜파구리), which is translated as “laton,” and even has to add the expensive Korean beef in the refrigerator.

Sir was on tenterhooks at that time. ……

What is this high class cuisine, I want to eat it!

Check it out.

Oh, it’s a mixture of two instant noodles (짜파게티) and small raccoon crispy noodles (너구리) made by Nongshim.

Ramen + Udon = Ladon.

The only thing superior is the Korean beef in the mix.

But this bowl of noodles, however, perfectly matched the situation in the mansion at the time.

A bowl with two types of cheap instant noodles and a portion of premium Korean beef, corresponding to the Kim family, the underground family and the noble Park family under the same roof.

8

Imitation of former housekeeper Kiku Hiroshi

The object of Braveheart’s imitation, indeed, was someone else.

A North Korean anchorwoman, Ri Chun Gi, who became a world class Internet sensation with her “ranting” broadcasts, is a clear metaphor for “North-South relations.

A clear metaphor for “North-South relations”.

9

What is the identity of the former housekeeper and his wife?

On the marriage certificate on the wall of the basement, the names of the two are Woo Gyeong-seo and Kiku Brao-gwang, born in 1977 and 1974, respectively.

Before their marriage, one lived in Daelim-dong (a Chinese community) and the other in Changsin-dong (a toy wholesale market), and both were from Gyeonggi Province (a rural area).

Their identities become mysterious when combined with Braobo’s parody of Lee Chun-hee and Oh Gun-seok’s glorification of her in the previous article.

In addition to the debt, there is also a possibility that they are “defectors” (this has not been confirmed by the creators and is only speculation).

10

What exactly does “taste” mean?

Duo Song was the first to suggest that the Jin family had a “smell.

The smell was not a real smell, but a smell that could be clearly described, like the smell of body odor, sweat, perfume, and shampoo.

The indescribable smell refers to the sour smell of poverty.

Although the movie attributes the smell to the moldy smell of the basement, Sir believes that the smell is more likely to be the result of the Park family and the underground family’s habits and unpleasant habits, which distinguish them from the upper class and lower class.

It’s like when Kizawa unconsciously curses “Hsipachi” after an accident and brakes his car.

A driver who has served the rich for a long time would never make such a mistake.

The smell is all-pervasive.

The nature of the poor, in the end, wears thin.

11

Who is Song Kang-ho learning his hand movements from?

While hiding under the table and listening to the Park family’s 15 forbidden scenes, Chizukawa covered his face with his arm.

He also covered his face with his arm when he defended “no plan” to Ki-woo.

This action was taken from the details of Kim Hye-ja’s acting in Bong Joon-ho’s previous movie ‘Mother’.

Both of them are also running away from the reality of what they are seeing and hearing.

12

Water (Water)

For the Park family, a heavy rain was just a view from the living room.

Even in the middle of a rainstorm, the family was protected by an “American-made” tent.

The same heavy rain was fatal to the Kim family.

Kiyou stopped to watch his shoes flood, unable to stop the family from sinking.

In this rain, you don’t see them going upstream, you see them going down and down, and finally back to their submerged home.

Not only are there floods choking their real homes, but even the toilets are “bullying” them, spewing black water.

If the stairs are the bridge to the upward flow, then the water is the cleansing agent that washes away desires and destroys illusions.

Qizhen resigned himself to his fate, took out his cigarette stash, and sat down on the toilet seat to hold down the black water.

It took Sir a long time to see the irony of this scene – the

Even the water is going higher, and she, on the other hand, can only stay where she is.

13

What did Bong Joon-ho do to Yuzheng?

The original effect of the rainstorm scene was not what we see now.

Originally, by mixing the sound several times, made a version of the rain sound lower, more majestic music.

But at the last moment, Bong Joon-ho decided to overturn the decision to make the rain sound stronger.

This is what we see now, a torrential downpour of destruction.

14

Why doesn’t Duo Song show up even though he has deciphered the code?

Gee, Bong Joon-ho is also a “chicken thief”.

This is purely a smoke screen he is using to make the audience nervous.

In fact, after translating the Morse code, Da Song fell asleep from exhaustion, so he didn’t do anything (he’s only a preschooler after all).

15

Portraits on Cans

There’s a fleeting shot in the basement with a row of cans on the table with various heads printed on them.

Not just any ones.

They include Abraham Lincoln, Nelson Mandela, Kim Dae-jung, and Lee Hee-ho and his wife, almost all of them representatives of “liberation.

The most important one was Kim Dae-jung.

He was president during the Asian financial crisis (IMF crisis) and worked to revive the Korean economy, which had been battered by the Asian financial crisis.

The IMF period is a turning point in the history of every Korean movie about the disparity between rich and poor.

16

Scripts and screenplays

The idea for Parasite actually took shape late in the filming of Snow Train, with a 20-page outline for Yuzi, and the script was finalized in late 2017.

The first casting that came to mind among the family members was Song Kang-ho and Choi Woo-sik.

It was too lonely to write by myself, and they were the ones who made me feel less lonely. It’s like having a complete cast in mind, as if there is an actor watching over them, the loneliness seems to be eliminated. The next is actress Park So-dan who played the role of Kiyoung’s sister. He is a very good actor, plus he resembles actor Choi Woo-sik. Even without much explanation, visually it looks like they are brother and sister. While writing the script, I put a picture of the two of them together. Then, a group of three people with a total of eight stars appeared in the show.

CINE21.

In order to bring out the details, all the subplots were painted by Bong Joon-ho himself.

Producer Jang Young-hwan said, “The images are engraved in my mind, very clear and precise, especially the decisive decisions.

In fact, both the architecture and even the behind-the-scenes sound effects and soundtrack were meticulously requested in order to achieve the effects presented so far.

17

Kim’s Design

The Kim family’s design put a huge amount of thought into the details.

The art team and set team spent months looking for all kinds of old tiles, door panels, window frames, insect screens, windows, doors, smoke pipes, etc. They then made small adjustments to create a space like the Jin family’s, which had been living in a civilian atmosphere for decades.

Then, they modified and adjusted them little by little to create a space that had been living in tinkering and commonplace for decades.

The layers of clothes stacked inside the house, the black mold on the walls, the oil on the gas stove, and the socks hanging by the bed gave off the moldy smell of a semi-underground room.

The outside area was covered with stinky kitchen scraps made by the props team, which made flies and mosquitoes fly everywhere during the shoot.

However, as the art team worked on it, they thought that since they had already done it, they might as well make it a little bigger.

As a result, nearly forty families were built, each with its own story in the semi-underground house.

There was the grandmother who had been separated from her children and was scavenging for scraps to make ends meet; there was the proud distributor from the Marine Corps; and there were many children, residents, and brides on the first floor. ……

“Parasite universe”?

It’s not impossible.

18

The Secret of the Toilet

The toilet that sprays black water is one of the most impressive props for Sir.

Director Bong Joon-ho and art director teamed up for this masterpiece.

Bong Joon-ho also explicitly named the toilet the “Temple of Shit” in the script.

This toilet is not an exaggeration, but a design by the art director through his own experience.

In the words of the art director, “I was saddened by the fact that the bathroom was full of mold and then combined it with the place where I once lived to create this space.

Because there was such a toilet in his former residence, it could only be built so high because of insufficient water pressure.

19

Park’s Design

In contrast to the details of the Kim family, the focus of the Park family’s design fell on the sense of space.

The most striking feature, of course, is that it is big.

How big is it?

The entire mansion was built on 600 pyeong of land (equivalent to about a quarter of a standard soccer field), with a 1-story building of over 200 pyeong and a 2-story building of over 250 pyeong.

In addition to the stairs going up and down, there are all sorts of big-name household items, as well as a lot of artwork in the house.

20

How expensive are luxury homes?

Answer from Bong Joon-ho himself: If we calculate the current per capita income of Korea, it may take 547 years to buy the mansion in the movie.

What is the concept?

According to data released by the Bank of Korea (the central bank) on March 5 of this year, Korea’s per capita gross national income (GNI) in 2018 was about $31,300 (data from the Shinbukyo newspaper).

In that case, the mansion would cost 3.13*547=$18,051,000.

That’s $127 million!

21

The Secret of Clothes

Compared to Kim Hye-jae’s purple flowered jacket in Mother and Ahn Seo-hyun’s red jacket in Okjae, this kind of clothing is very conspicuous in the environment.

In order to emphasize the importance of the environment, Parasite chose subdued colors, and each family’s clothes fit the characters.

The clothes of the Kim family basically have a mark of ill-fitting and multiple washes, especially the belly flesh that shows every time Jong-sook raises her hand.

The color of Bravo Guang’s dress is the closest to the house.

Because she was the character who lived in the mansion the longest, she assimilated into the space the most.

It is also intended to give the audience the illusion that she is a mother-in-law or mother-in-law rather than a housekeeper when she first appears on stage.

The Park family’s clothes are more of a minimalist design.

Since the Park family’s identity is not a plutocrat, but just a new tech nouveau riche, the clothes they wear are not very expensive, but they choose a more tailored and practical style.

22

The Bitter Music Director

The music director of “Parasite” and “Tamako” was the same person, Jung Jae-il.

He had already received the script for Parasite in late 2017 and early 2018.

The most difficult piece of music in the film, however, was the passage called “The Belt of Faith”.

The 7 minutes and 30 seconds long “Peach” took nearly three months to shoot.

The soundtrack alone was composed seven times, each lasting eight minutes, before being finalized in the final version.

23

Awesome Director of Photography

The photographer of Burning and Parasite is actually the same person, Hong Wilderness Bong.

The person who appears most often next to Bong Joon-ho in the drama.

In order to capture the difference between Kim and Park, the two not only went to various locations in Korea, but also had to be precise with the lighting, colors, shooting routes and angles.

For example, the Kim family’s nighttime entrance lights are dim and greenish, while the Park family uses yellowish lights to highlight the more gorgeous texture.

Not to mention all those stair routes from top to bottom, all carefully designed.

To make matters even more difficult, there were several spots where the light had to appear during the filming of Parasite.

A lot of time was spent trying to capture the moment of light entering the semi-underground room.

We had to determine what time the sun would enter the semi-underground room, and we had to set up the camera and wait before sunrise.

However, summer is different from fall and winter in that it changes as soon as the sun rises. ……

Miss a moment and wait another day.

24

Scenes that almost didn’t work

Because it rarely snowed last year at the location, the only snow scene we were supposed to shoot almost didn’t happen.

The director had set a deadline to shoot the scene with or without snow.

The weather forecast for that day was not available, so I was going to give up just like that.

But on the way to the shoot, it suddenly started snowing heavily, and that’s when the snow scene happened.

25

Scenery and Sets

The Kim family and the Park family were actually shot on location, but one of them was a live shot – the

The JTBC news report.

Those two news reporters are actually both active reporters for JTBC.

Because director Bong Joon-ho didn’t like the fake look of the news report in the movie, he borrowed a studio from a TV station and hired a stand-in to play the role of the famous anchor Sun Suk-hee.

The funniest thing is that after winning the award, Bong Joon-ho was interviewed by Sun Suk-hee in the same studio.

26

What exactly did Kiyou write in his notebook to Tahui?

Haha, actually the actors forgot about it after the shoot, and so did the director.

The art crew didn’t know where the notebooks were thrown away after filming so ……

There is no answer to this question.

(Of course, it’s worth learning how to provoke a girl)

27

What are the secrets in the paintings?

The painting of Torso actually reveals early on that there is someone in the basement.

The largest person in the painting is thought to be Torso himself.

And notice the lower right corner – the black piece, which represents the black hole in the basement.

The yellow arrow on the right goes up, and there is a human figure next to it, suggesting that someone has come out of the basement.

This is the strange thing that happened to Dosong in first grade.

What’s even more ironic is that the Kim family’s daughter, while giving art tutorials, also gave the Park family’s mistress a tasteful science lesson on a theory she had read on the Internet.

The lower right side of the painting, often referred to as the hypochondriac area, is dark, which is why it shows mental symptoms (big idea).

28

How far have you gone in order not to be dramatic?

Before the Cannes screening, there were other more powerful measures than just the appearance of director Bong Joon-ho’s anti-spoiler announcement.

The red carpet at Cannes seems to be fully attended, right?

In fact, “that actor” also went to Cannes, but in order to avoid being caught on camera, he didn’t walk the red carpet or participate in any promotional activities.

Even overseas, there are measures in place, both in the medals presented and in the posters, which all include a reminder not to give away the drama.

Sir suggests that you check out the Douban cast list again.

Well, there are surprises.

29

20 Years of Change

Parasite is the fourth collaboration between Bong Joon-ho and Song Kang-ho.

It’s been nearly 20 years since they met, to “Memories of Murder”, “Han River Monster”, “Snow Train” and “Parasite”.

But when asked what has changed in the last 20 years, Song Kang-ho answered like this –

“Nothing else has changed; the only thing that has changed is that the weight has doubled.”

It is really the partner who understands each other best.

The phrase “nothing has changed” corresponds exactly to what Bong Joon-ho said in his acceptance speech.

“I’m just a film buff who made up his mind to be a director at the age of 12, and was extremely cautious and silly at the same time.”

What changes is the weight, but what remains the same is the original intention of the film.

30

The Secret of the Epilogue

Do a lot of people just walk away or turn it off before reading the subtitles?

The final egg of “Parasite” is in the closing song.

It is sung by actor Choi Woo-sik of Ki-woo, and is called “A Cup of Soju”.

Music director Jung Jae-il composed the music and Bong Joon-ho wrote the lyrics, and sang the mood of Kiyoung in the drama as casually as if it were a story.

The lyrics are also an emotionally complex drama.

길은 희뿌연 안개속에 The White Foggy Road

힘껏 마시는 미세먼지 Breathing Haze Harder

Why end with a song like this?

Director Bong Joon-ho said, “When people are filled with various emotions, they want to drink a glass of soju, and at the end of the movie, listening to the lyrics of this song, which carries the mood of Chiyou, I believe that the movie’s after-hyme of mixed emotions will continue.”

Aftertaste.

Why do all good movies have after-thoughts?

Why is it that when a good movie comes along, we can’t help but swipe and swipe and swipe and swipe and read and read?

There’s a picture that sort of answers that.

In the director’s interview for Parasite, Bong Joon-ho is behind row after row of densely packed DVDs.

Some people see 120 minutes of film as a story.

But some people see it as half a lifetime’s work and a lifetime’s passion for another group of people.

Sir will always hear a comment.

It’s just a movie. Is it necessary to analyze so much, interpret so much, and make it so complicated?

One “pretend” overrides all.

Fake it? Is it complicated?

In fact, film for Sir is very simple.

It’s like a friend with loyalty (especially in good movies).

The more you give, the more he will give back.

The more you give, the more he must give back.
