The outbreak of Wuhan pneumonia (novel coronavirus disease, COVID-19) in the Chinese community in Cambodia on February 20 has broken the country’s epidemic prevention efforts, and the recent epidemic has further deteriorated, with the number of confirmed cases in the past few days exceeding the classification criteria for low- and medium-risk countries. In order to combat the epidemic, Cambodian Prime Minister Han Sen announced an emergency “closure” of the capital city of Phnom Penh for two weeks from the evening of the 14th.
According to the Cambodia-China Times, Han Sen revealed in a speech on the 14th that the epidemic has worsened in Phnom Penh and that the government has decided to “close” the city for two weeks in order to contain the spread of the epidemic.
Due to the new wave of community outbreak, a two-week curfew was imposed in Phnom Penh from April 1 to 14. However, as the outbreak continues to accelerate, Phnom Penh Mayor Khun Sen announced that Phnom Penh will extend the curfew from April 15 to 28.
During the curfew, unauthorized vehicles and people will be prohibited from traveling from 8 p.m. daily to 5 a.m. the next day. All food establishments must suspend dine-in and only provide take-out services.
Khun Saen stressed that anyone who violates the above curfew order will face serious legal consequences according to the relevant epidemic prevention regulations.
According to the announcement of the Ministry of Health of Cambodia on April 14, 178 new cases were reported in the country, including 177 cases associated with the “2.20 community infection incident”, mainly in the city of Phnom Penh, with as many as 149 cases. As of 7:00 a.m. on April 13, Cambodia has a total of 4,696 confirmed cases and 33 deaths, and the total number of confirmed cases of “2.20 community infection” has reached 4,160.
