Norwegian company announces discontinuation of CGTN and CCTV programs

Norway’s Telia announced on Tuesday that it has stopped broadcasting programs from China’s Global TV Network and China’s CCTV. The decision was made after they received an open letter from victims of China’s forced television confessions.

The international human rights organization Safeguard Defenders published a report on April 13 stating that more than a dozen victims who have been subjected to forced television confessions by the Chinese official media, China Universal Television Network and CCTV-4, have recently sent open letters to television providers in various countries, asking them to review and carefully consider broadcasting these channels.

These victims emphasize that they have suffered forced TV confessions simply for doing their job of defending basic human rights. When torture did not work, Chinese police used threats against loved ones to extract confessions.

Victims point out that these forced televised confessions, often under torture and threats by the Chinese police, are actively collaborated by China’s Global Television Network and CCTV, and are designed to spread false news and instill fear in the rights defense community.

Defenders also appealed to the European Commission and the European Regulators Group for Audiovisual Media Services in this regard, as the overall European regulatory framework is binding on national providers and regulators.
