Public opinion is spreading against the promotion of the Chinatown project in Gangwon Province. The public criticizes that this is a disguised participation in the Communist Party’s Belt and Road without considering national sentiment. There is a petition by nationals to interrupt the construction. As of 1 p.m. on the 7th, more than 430,000 people have signed the petition.
The “China Town” posted on Cheong Wa Dae’s national petition website refers to the “Korea-China Culture Town” in Chuncheon City and Hongcheon County, Gangwon Province, which is being built jointly by Gangwon Province, People’s Daily, an organ of the Chinese Communist Party, and four organizations including Kolon International.
Chuncheon Economic and Social Union Director Kwon Yong Beom said that the project is clearly being used by the Chinese Communist Party, so it is hard to understand why Gangwon Province is still pushing forward.
Chuncheon Economic and Trade Union Director Kwon Yong Beom: “The local residents are very much against it, and from the emotional aspect, there are many people who believe that the ultimate responsibility for the Chinese Communist virus lies with the Chinese Communist Party. Why would such a project be built in Chuncheon, Gangwon Province under such circumstances, when it only benefits the CCP itself, as well as a cause that is being used politically by the CCP?”
The project will cost up to 1 trillion 6.2 billion won, equivalent to about $1.5 billion.
The Kangwon Province Daily News reported on March 23 that the “Korea-China Culture City” is intended to commemorate the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Korea and China in 2022. The newspaper said, “In order to avoid opposition from the public, the name of the “China Complex Culture City” was changed to “Korea-China Culture City”.
The company’s newest product is the “China Culture City”. The project has aroused strong opposition from Korean citizens.
Chuncheon Economic and Social Union Director Kwon Yong-bum: “It’s not just because of disgust that we are doing this. Before, like the Chinese Communist Party’s northeast project or cultural project, whether it’s kimchi, Korean costumes and other cultures are said to be our own, it’s not enough to distort history, but to try to codify these into our own history, and the people have found out about this. From that point of view, the opposition is also strong.”
And back in December 2019, at the inauguration ceremony of the Korea-China Culture City at the People’s Daily headquarters in Beijing, Yoon Chang-un, manager of Kolon International Co. indicated that the Chinese Composite Culture Village project is a key project to practice the spirit of China’s Belt and Road.
The Chinese Communist Party’s Belt and Road project, which has caused a debt crisis for the local government, has been widely criticized as a debt trap.
