The National Archives reported Tuesday that right-wing group Project Veritas released undercover footage of CNN technical director Charlie Chester, who admitted that CNN had engaged in anti-Trump “propaganda” with a “focus” on getting Trump out of office in 2020. Chester, CNN’s technical director, was having dinner with fellow CNN staffers at a restaurant, discussing various topics, when an undercover reporter from The Truth Project was involved, unaware that Chester had been filmed.
Chester argued to the undercover reporter that CNN was responsible for President Trump’s failure to get re-elected last year. Chester said, “Look, we did what we did. We got Trump out.” . He added, “And I’m 100 percent convinced that if it wasn’t for CNN, I don’t think Trump would have been voted out of office.” Chester admitted he joined CNN to be part of the anti-Trump “propaganda.
Last year, The Truth Project had access to multiple morning call logs of top CNN executives. In the Oct. 9 morning call, CNN President Jeff Zucker can be heard telling employees that they can’t count President Trump’s crazy and “bizarre” behavior as normal, with Zucker saying Trump may be suffering from steroid-related symptoms.
Jeff Zucker said at the time, “This is a president who knows he’s going to lose, he knows he’s in trouble, he’s got coronavirus, maybe he’s on steroids, or he’s post-steroidal, I don’t know exactly. But he’s acting out of character and desperate, and let’s not normalize that.”
In the new video, Chester confirms that CNN not only focused on President Trump’s health on a massive scale, but that it was “propaganda” driven entirely by “speculation. When Trump’s hands trembled, we brought in medical personnel to speculate that there might be nerve damage and that Trump was unfit to be president. We were making up stories, and that was propaganda. And we didn’t have much else to say at that time. “
In contrast, Biden was deliberately portrayed by CNN as a “young old man,” Chester noted, noting that CNN would constantly show footage of him jogging. Chester said, “Showing Biden watching jogging is obviously a way to get people to focus less on Biden’s age. I think we let Biden get by.”
Further conversations between Chester and investigative reporters from The Truth Project confirmed the extent to which CNN engaged in propaganda during the campaign. Chester told the undercover reporter, “Our focus was on getting Trump out of office, that’s what it was all about.”
Chester added that the next “focus” would be on climate change, to make it feel like an epidemic, to make people afraid. Chester stressed, “Fear sells.”
