The Apple Studios-backed film “Emancipation,” starring Will Smith, will not shoot in the state of Joe as originally planned in protest of the state’s recently passed voter integrity law, the first major Hollywood production to pull out of the state because of resistance to the new legislation.
On Monday, Will Smith and director Antoine Fuqua, in a joint statement to Deadline, the media outlet that first broke the story, confirmed the decision. They said, “Joe State’s new voting law is reminiscent of the barriers to voting that were passed to prevent many Americans from voting at the end of the Reconstruction era in America. Regrettably, we feel compelled to move our film production efforts from Joe State to another state.”
The American Reconstruction period in American history refers to the years 1865-1877, when the Confederacy was destroyed along with slavery in an attempt to resolve the legacy of the Civil War.
Based on a true story, “Emancipation” tells the story of an escaped slave who travels north to join the Union Army. A report in Deadline says the film is now likely to be shot in Louisiana, where the real historical events took place.
Withdrawing filming from the Joe State means the production, will not be able to take advantage of Joe State’s generous financial incentives, which is the main reason many Hollywood shoots have moved to Joe State over the past decade. In 2019, Joe State reportedly handed out $870 million in tax credits to the film and television filming industry. The decision will also deprive hundreds of Joe State’s blue-collar workers of jobs at major studios.
A Breitbart News reader writes why Hollywood won’t tell the truth about the American South, as told in the blockbuster “Emancipation,” when the Democrats were in power, and the Democrats were the ones who wanted and owned slavery, and they even wrote it into their proposed Constitution. And, the Democrats voted unanimously against the 14th and 15th Amendments that gave citizenship rights to former slaves. Democrats enacted Jim Crow laws in Democratic-led states to prevent African-Americans from having the right to vote. Democrats engaged in the longest filibuster in U.S. Senate history to stop the Civil Rights Act of 1957.
