The Breitbart News reported Monday that Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has hung signs on all three major interstates entering Florida, informing all those entering the state from the highway that the Sunshine State has implemented Electronic Verification of Identity (E-Verify).
E-Verify is the federal background check system used to see if prospective employees can legally work in the United States. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) makes E-Verify available to every state and territory in the United States, but it is not mandatory and is currently voluntary.
The E-Verify DHS website says, “The E-Verify system, allows registered employers to confirm the eligibility of their employees to work in the United States. Employers electronically match the information provided by employees on the Employment Eligibility Verification Form (the Form I-9) with Social Security Administration (SSA) and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) records to verify the identity and employment eligibility of newly hired employees.”
DeSantis told Breitbart News exclusively, “I want all residents and visitors to know the news that Florida already uses E-Verify. Before I became governor, Florida tried to pass E-Verify legislation and failed for several years. Last year, I worked with the state legislature to get E-Verify across the finish line and signed into law. Using an E-Verify system not only increases upward pressure on Floridians’ wages, it also protects public safety and can ensure the legitimacy of the workforce, which is critical to maintaining the rule of law and stopping illegal immigration into Florida, and given the state of crisis at the border, using E-Verify is more important than ever.”
DeSantis’ popularity has been soaring as he has been more effective than many Democratic governors in the northeastern United States in dealing with the Communist virus pandemic, without yet using any coercion or restrictions.
Governor DeSantis noted, “The Biden administration has been so bad on immigration that it threatens to turn all states, including Florida, into border states. Under Biden, we must enforce our own laws to protect our residents, that’s very clear.”
Florida’s new law requires employers, both public and private, to use E-Verify when hiring employees, and there is no minimum threshold to trigger E-Verify, meaning that anyone working in Florida must pass E-Verify.
