After announcing her high-profile comeback in February, Guo Meimei, a wealthy Chinese woman, was detained by police in March for making and selling banned diet food. Recently, more details about the case have come to light.

According to an April 12 report by the mainland media, on March 18, 75 people, including Zeng Moumou, Zhou Moumou and Guo Moumou, were criminally detained by Shanghai Pudong police on suspicion of producing and selling toxic and harmful weight-loss health food products, including Guo Moumou, who is the online celebrity Guo Meimei.

The case involved an amount of up to 50 million yuan, as well as three production sites, 24 sales points, more than 65,000 capsules of toxic and harmful weight-loss health food, about 34 kilograms of production raw materials, three sets of production equipment and more than 20,000 pieces of outer packaging.

According to the report, Guo Meimei and others advertised on the Internet to attract consumers to buy “special effect weight loss health food”. However, the product has added the prohibited ingredient “sibutramine”, which can cause harm to the body.

According to the informant, Guo Meimei, as an online distributor, mainly sells the weight loss food in her circle of friends. The cost of the diet food is very low, only a few cents per grain, and the price to the distributor is only 1 yuan, but customers have to pay 69 yuan to buy it.

In July 2014, Guo was arrested on suspicion of opening a casino and was later sentenced to six years in prison and released in July 2019 after completing her sentence. It is alleged that after her release from prison she changed to DJing and performing in bars around the mainland, earning up to 600,000 per month.

On February 21 this year, Guo Meimei suddenly went on a high-profile live broadcast on online social media platforms, once again showing off luxury cars and expensive costume jewelry. This is a way to publicly show off your wealth and announce your “comeback”. Some netizens found that Guo Meimei’s appearance has changed a lot, and the past is like two people, probably after plastic surgery.

The mainland media has commented that Guo Meimei’s “unusual path” may have something to do with her family environment of origin. She was born in a single-parent family in Yiyang, Hunan Province, where her father had a history of fraud and her mother had a long history of running leisure services such as baths, saunas and tea ceremonies.

According to reports, the “Guo Meimei incident” started in 2011. On June 11 of that year, Guo Meimei, in her capacity as “general manager of the Red Cross Society of China’s business,” showed off her wealth on Weibo, saying she lived in a large villa, drove a Maserati and Lamborghini, and owned a dozen Hermes bags and other watches.

The microblog caused an uproar at the time, with the public questioning the flow of the money received by the Red Cross. Despite claims by Red Cross officials that “Guo Meimei has nothing to do with the Red Cross,” the Red Cross has since lost its reputation, its credibility has collapsed, and its donations have fallen to the ground.

Previously, the media revealed that Guo had a number of godfathers and bigwigs behind her, the largest of which was Liu Yunshan, a former member of the Communist Party’s Standing Committee, although the claims have not been confirmed.

A blog post by “Puhuitang Fisherman” at the time revealed that Guo Meimei’s backstage was Liu Yunshan, a member of the Jiangist Standing Committee in charge of propaganda. The article also said that Guo had a strong public relations team behind her. Guo not only serves Liu’s father and son, but also many high ranking officials are on the list of escorts.

According to previous Weibo reports, Qiu XX, chairman of Tianliu Group, is Guo’s first “godfather”; Qi XX, chairman of a famous investment group in Beijing, is Guo’s second “godfather”. Each time Guo Meimei went to see her “godfather”, she would get a reward, and it is rumored that her more than 2 million Maserati is a gift from her “godfather”.
