China’s National Internet Information Office recently opened a special reporting line for people to report distortions of the Communist Party’s history, attacks on the Communist Party’s leadership and defamation of heroes and martyrs. The Net Information Office quoted Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Communist Party, as emphasizing the need to “oppose historical nihilism in a clear-cut manner.
In the context of the recent Communist Party, “historical nihilism” refers to the trend of denying the socialist system and the leadership of the Communist Party. Xi Jinping has said that the key point of “historical nihilism” is to fundamentally deny the guiding position of Marxism and the historical inevitability of China’s move toward socialism, and to deny the leadership of the Communist Party of China.
This year marks the centenary of the founding of the Chinese Communist Party. The reporting center of China’s State Internet Information Office recently posted an article on its WeChat public number, saying that “some people with ulterior motives, under the banner of so-called ‘reflecting on history’ and ‘restoring the truth’, have been spreading historical nihilism and false statements on the Internet by taking things out of context and making things up out of nothing. The report is a good one.
Therefore, the Netizen Office recently opened a special area for reporting “harmful information involving historical nihilism” on its official website, app and telephone, accepting content including: distorting the history of the CPC, the history of New China, the history of reform and opening up and the history of socialist development; attacking the leadership, guiding ideology and policies of the CPC; defaming heroes and martyrs; and denying the excellent Chinese traditional culture, revolutionary culture and advanced socialist culture.
Xi Jinping attaches considerable importance to CPC history education. In a 2013 seminar for new Central Committee members to implement the spirit of studying the 18th National Congress, he mentioned that one of the reasons for the collapse of the Soviet Union was the comprehensive denial of the history of the Soviet Union and the Soviet Communist Party, the denial of Lenin and Stalin, and historical nihilism, which rendered party groups at all levels almost useless.
He also said in February this year, the mobilization meeting of the Party history study and education, we must clearly oppose historical nihilism, strengthen the ideological guidance and theoretical analysis, clarify the vague understanding of some major issues of Party history, one-sided understanding.
A number of netizens were recently criminally detained for allegedly denigrating military personnel killed or injured in the 2020 Sino-Indian border conflict. China has passed the Heroic Martyrs Protection Law in 2018, and those who desecrate and deny heroic martyrs, glorify aggression, and violate public security management, or even commit crimes, will be held accountable according to the law.
