The Ukrainian military said today that an artillery attack by Russian-backed separatist rebels killed one Ukrainian serviceman and seriously wounded another. Meanwhile, the Kremlin noted that Russia will not go to war with Ukraine.
AFP reported that fighting between Ukrainian forces and pro-Russian separatists who control two eastern regions of the country has intensified in recent weeks, raising fears that the long-running conflict is heating up.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said in a television interview today, “Of course, no one intends to go to war, and on the whole, no one can accept the possibility of such a war.”
Peskov added: “And no one can accept the possibility of a civil war in Ukraine.” He insisted that Moscow authorities are not involved in the conflict.
The U.S. White House said on Aug. 8 that the number of Russian troops currently stationed on the border with Ukraine is the highest since 2014. That was when Russia annexed Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula (Crimea).

As of today’s artillery attack, the Ukrainian side said 27 soldiers have been killed in the east this year.
