Iran’s semi-official Fars News Agency, citing a spokesman for the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, reported that an “accident” occurred at Iran’s nuclear energy facility today, but caused no injuries or damage.
Behrouz Kamalvandi, a spokesman for the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, said that “an accident occurred in part of the circuit of the uranium enrichment facility” at the Natanz nuclear facility. Just the day before, Iran announced it had activated advanced uranium enrichment centrifuges at the site, again violating its commitments in the 2015 nuclear deal.
“There were no casualties or contamination and the cause of the accident is under investigation, more details will be released later,” he said.
There was an explosion at an advanced centrifuge plant at Natanz in July 2020. Authorities blamed that accident on “sabotage” by “terrorists,” but did not release the results of the investigation.
In a ceremony televised on Iranian state-run television, President Hassan Rouhani launched a replacement plant, a centrifuge train for uranium enrichment and two test centrifuge trains at Natanz on Oct.
The new equipment allows Iran to produce enriched uranium faster and in greater quantities, reaching levels that violate the 2015 nuclear deal.
