Karavaz, who currently works for local private TV station Star TV and news blog bloko.gr, was driving home from work on Friday (April 9) when he was shot by two unidentified motorcycle gunmen with silenced weapons as he got out of his car in front of his house in the Alimos district of Athens, killing him instantly with at least six shots.
Police collected more than 10 shell casings at the scene of the crime. A police officer, who asked not to be named, said that the killer’s method of committing the crime was quite professional. The motive for the assassination of Karavaz is not yet clear.
A Greek government spokesman said the fatal shooting of Karavaz shocked everyone.
In the case of the murder, which has shocked Greek society, media organizations say it is important to find out if Karavaz was killed as a result of the case he is currently investigating, which involves organized crime and corruption.

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) also strongly condemned the fatal shooting and called on Greek police to swiftly investigate and bring the perpetrators to justice as soon as possible.
“The murder of a journalist is a despicable and cowardly act.” Ursula von der Leyen, president of the EU Executive Committee, said, “Media freedom is most sacred and journalists must be able to work safely. I would like to express my condolences to the Karavaz family and hope that the killers will soon be brought to justice.”
