The New York City Police Department has increased the number of plainclothes officers patrolling multiple areas in response to frequent hate speech against Asians, and an African-American man was arrested on the scene in midtown Manhattan on the afternoon of the 9th after he yelled at a man to “go back to China before you get killed. This is the second suspect in a week to be arrested by plainclothes officers on the street for a hate crime motive.

Police said a plainclothes officer was patrolling 33rd Street at Seventh Avenue at about 4:30 p.m. when Juvian Rodriguez, a 35-year-old African-American man, approached him and began yelling, “Go back to China before you get buried in a cemetery! (Go back to China before you end up in a graveyard!)

Rodriguez, unaware that he was standing in front of a plainclothes officer, then continued, “I’m gonna slap you and then stab you in the face.” (I’m gonna slap the holy piss out of you and stab you in the face.)

Police said the officer on the scene immediately notified officers from a nearby police station to come to his support, who arrested Rodriguez on the scene; sources said the man has a long list of prior arrests, with more than 20, including drug and assault arrests.

The last thing he said to the plainclothes officer before being handcuffed was, “I don’t care if I go to jail,” the officer at the scene said.

“Apparently he got his wish.” One source joked, “We’re like a ‘wishing pool’ for this scumbag.”

On the evening of the 9th, Rodriguez was escorted from the Midtown South police station by officers when a reporter asked him, “Why are you doing this?” when a reporter asked him, “Why did you do it?” and he shouted, “Your mother!” (Your mother!)

Sharon Williams, a 50-year-old African-American woman, was caught in the street by plainclothes city police in the afternoon of June 6 at the Good Choice For Nails nail salon at 43 Madison St. in Manhattan’s Chinatown.
