I had a lot of pain, then went to the hospital, the doctor said it was not lung pain, it was the nerve pain on the upper side.
Reporter: How did you get the knife?

Reporter: How did you think you would be sentenced?
Chen Sihan: I didn’t think the sentence would be as severe as eight years. At that time, I didn’t know much about it, but some guards who knew the situation told me that the maximum sentence would be three to five years.

Chen Sihan: I had heard about the life in an unregulated facility, and I was really scared.

Reporter: After being locked up, what was your mood?
Chen Sihan: I was very scared. I was very scared in the detention center and the prison. However, I was not bullied inside, and almost all of them were friendly to me.
Reporter: What are the criteria for sentence reduction inside?
Chen Sihan: Points are added and deducted, some labor will be added, and points will be deducted if it is not completed. They used to give praise once a month, but later it became once every six months. I have been praised every time, so my sentence was reduced.
Reporter: What are the requirements for parole?
Chen Sihan: In addition to the eight major crimes, the sentence of 10 years or less can be paroled. The requirement is to serve more than half of your sentence, but basically you have to serve two-thirds of your total sentence. When I first went in, it was really hard to accept, especially on the day the sentence was handed down, my whole body was numb. When he said the word eight years, my whole body directly paralyzed. I couldn’t use any of my strength, including the seal, they used my hand to stamp it on, I couldn’t move at all.
Reporter: How did you feel when some friends wrote to you that they had gotten into college?
Chen Sihan: I was happy for them, but I was very disappointed when I thought about my own situation. They sometimes came to see me and cheered me on, so I’m really grateful to them.
Reporter: What are your thoughts on the case?
Chen Sihan: When I was in the detention center, I honestly didn’t think about it, because it was really hard. When I saw my parents running for me, I sometimes thought that I should just let it go and didn’t want them to work so hard. At that time, I really felt that the chances were not good, and my parents were still running for me every day, and it hurt.
Reporter: Is there anything that impresses you in the detention center?
Chen Sihan: Nothing really, I was basically on my own. I was impressed by the officers who helped me. Every child who was admitted to the detention center, they would understand what mistakes he had made. When I first got in, I was really confused, and they helped me a lot, so I’m very grateful to them for that.
Reporter: Do your parents say hello in advance when they come to visit you in the detention center?
Chen Sihan: There is no way to greet them in advance, so they just live day by day. Every month, I look forward to my parents’ visits.
Reporter: Do you remember the first visit?
Chen Sihan: When I saw my parents, I felt they had aged a lot and I cried during the first visit. They seldom cried during the visit because they were afraid of bringing negative emotions to me.
Reporter: Do you write letters often?
Chen Sihan: I write often, but not every month. On my parents’ side, they call home once a month on the phone.

Chen Sihan: It’s hard to express that kind of thought, not that kind of happy emotion, but more of a relief.
Reporter: What has changed in your mindset during the past six months of parole?
Chen Sihan: The environment is different and the mentality is definitely different. Inside, life is the same every day. After I got out, I thought about a lot of things, and I thought about all kinds of things.
Now I think there is a chance that the complaint will be successful, but I don’t hold all the hopes. I definitely want to, after all, affect my life in the future, but some things are unforeseeable.
Reporter: Your mother said you are not as optimistic as before?

Reporter: What do you do every day after you go home?
Chen Sihan: I play the guitar, except in winter, I play all the time. There is a music class inside the detention center, I learned in 2017, in addition to the guitar also learn saxophone. Every day, we write and read books. We worked during the day, and at night it was free time. Others are playing, I will go to learn something, and so is the time to play out of learning.
Reporter: When are you most relaxed now?
Chen Sihan: When it’s quiet, I sit on the edge of my bed and look out the window. My room happens to be facing some mountains, so when it’s quiet, I can look at the mountains and relax the most. Reporter: When your parole is over, is your mood relatively relaxed?

Reporter: Is there anything in particular you want to do when your parole is over?
Chen Sihan: I want to see the people who have helped me. I want to visit the police officers at the detention center, and then I want to go to Guiyang to visit my classmates and friends and say thank you to them in person.

Chen Sihan: A termination of parole at the local judicial office, and then the sentence will be completely over.

Reporter: You took a college diploma in law from the unregistered center?
Chen Sihan: Yes, I am the second batch. There is also cooperation with some vocational schools and enterprises, if you learn sewing skills inside, if you have the intention, you can go to work in the factory directly after you come out.
The study time is every Friday morning, and then also on weekends, the examination time is the same as outside. Our group is also more focused on learning, and later changed a study day. Only that day to study, the whole day to study.

Reporter: Will you consider going back to school in the future?

I stay at home every day and go out for a walk once in a while. I don’t think I’m too much of a playful person, and I think it’s good to be quiet. I like to work and study alone, I am more efficient when I am quiet. Then I cook my own food.
Besides doing my internship, I usually listen to songs, read books, and play guitar. My way to spend time is to be in a quiet place and just listen to songs by myself.

Chen Sihan: Definitely not anymore, but I enjoy the atmosphere with them.
Reporter: Do you still think about what happened at school?

Chen Sihan: In that case it’s good, after all there is a stain here. No one knows what happened to you for any reason, he only knows that you have a criminal record. Although underage crimes with a sentence of less than 5 years are sealed files, no one can check unless you commit another crime.
But I was 8 years in prison and had a record all along, so it would have been nice if the sentence had been changed, I would have been able to walk down the street with my chest up and at least have a good account of what happened to everyone.
Reporter: If this incident had not happened, you would have followed the established course of development?
Chen Sihan: I just want to live an ordinary life, and I don’t want to do anything big, I just want to live a good life. I just want to live a good life, and then pay back my parents well. Even if the sentence is changed, I can’t go back to my life path. I still stayed inside for so long, I still didn’t go to college, still didn’t enjoy that kind of life, just that there is no record.
Reporter: Have you ever thought about going to college somewhere?
Chen Sihan: I wanted to go to Shanghai, and my highest goal at that time was Fudan University. After all, it was the highest goal, so even if I couldn’t go to school, I had to work hard towards it.
Reporter: Did you think about what kind of work you wanted to do?
Chen Sihan: I hadn’t thought about it that much at that time, but I was influenced by my uncle and aunt, and I still wanted to develop my career in the medical field. But these things are subject to change. You may not necessarily get into the university of your choice, or study the profession of your choice. Or some factors may make you have new ideas and change your ideals and goals.
Reporter: Now, what do you think is the best way to deal with the problems you encountered back then?
Chen Sihan: Actually, I think it’s hard to deal with it, unless you leave that school. Since he is such a person, he must hold a grudge. Even if you go to the teachers and parents to inform the situation, one day when you leave alone, he beat you up again, you can’t do anything about it.
Reporter: What are the after-effects of the serious injuries you suffered at the time?
Chen Sihan: now breathing is sometimes still very difficult, will be uncomfortable. But now you can also do strenuous exercise, much better than before. It’s just that occasionally it’s hard to breathe. Anyway, it is a little bit harder than normal to breathe air. Now it is much less affected than at that time, when it hurt every day.
