Former Secretary of State Michael Pompeo urged Americans not to attend the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, calling them a “genocidal Olympics” because of the Communist Party’s treatment of the country’s Muslim minority, the Uighurs, and its suppression of free speech, Breitbart News reported Thursday, 8.
“I don’t think we should let any Americans go to this genocidal Olympics,” Pompeo said Tuesday as he and former national security adviser O’Brien opened the Nixon Foundation’s Nixon Symposium.
Citing the risk that U.S. athletes could run afoul of Chinese (Communist) law and end up in jail, Pompeo explained, “How would you send kids there to compete, and if the kids say ‘the food is terrible here,’ they could spend a long time in a Chinese (Communist) prison.”
Pompeo also tweeted the same day, citing reports of alleged Chinese slave labor manufacturing of Olympic uniforms provided by the Olympic Committee, writing, “If a U.S. Olympian complains (about this), he or she will be arrested and could end up in a Chinese (Communist) prison under Communist Party national security laws. This is just the beginning. …….”
O’Brien, a former national security adviser, said that during his time as a former hostage envoy in the Trump administration, he also saw a deterioration in Chinese (Communist) state behavior in detaining foreign nationals that has come to resemble Iran.
According to O’Brien, “Anybody has to think twice about why you’re going to China and what you’re going to do there. Unless you want to take the risk of staying in China (Communist Party) for a long time as a guest of Mr. Xi Jinping. “
The State Department this week rebuffed suggestions that U.S. officials could boycott the Olympics. PayPal founder Peter Thiel predicted at the seminar that even without a boycott, Western leaders would not go. While it won’t be a full boycott like the 1980 Moscow Olympics, it will be as bad as the Western boycott of the Sochi Winter Olympics in 2014.
I hope we can convince (the IOC) not to hold the Winter Olympics there,” Pompeo said at the Nixon seminar. We figured out pretty quickly how to relocate the All-Star Game, and maybe we can figure out how to move the Olympics somewhere else, too.”
Sen. Rick Scott, a federal Republican from Florida, issued a statement saying, “For more than a year, I’ve been calling on the IOC to stand up to the Communist Party’s genocide of the Uighur people and find a new host for the 2022 Olympics.” He said, “The United States is fully capable of hosting the Olympics, and I expect Mr. Biden to do everything possible to move the Games out of Beijing.”
