Four Zambian students who stole 15 bottles of wine seven times from a supermarket in mainland China were convicted of theft by a Chinese Communist court in the first instance and fined 6,500 yuan.
Jiangsu University responded that three of the defendants had been expelled from the university, and another defendant had left the university in 2017 because his residence permit had expired, making him an illegal resident in mainland China.
The root cause of the foreign students’ shenanigans is that the people do not suffer from inequality, that is, “unfairness”: foreign students are studying in the best universities in China with worse grades, receiving the highest scholarships, and picking up the most beautiful Chinese girls with the most “lowly” grades. Foreign students are studying in the best colleges and universities in China with worse grades, receiving the highest scholarships, picking up the most beautiful Chinese girls, and “cheapening” the goodwill of China and colleges with the most “dirty” behavior. Individual universities have no bottom line to shield foreign students (Soochow University is not bad this time, it’s a passing grade), and after being hit in the face, they smile and send the other half of their faces up again, why?
How do the superiors evaluate the annual work of the local government? It is difficult to determine a scientific quantitative standard, so the most easily accepted over the years, or GDP. how to evaluate the education sector and the annual work of the universities, more difficult to determine a scientific quantitative standard, so the most simple and easily accepted, or university rankings, China’s rankings are not yet, must be international rankings, the main ones are the UK QS rankings.
Europe and the United States are aging, the implementation of elite education, suitable for entering the university of excellence is relatively small, facing two choices, one is to recruit a large number of outstanding international students, the second is to lower the requirements, recruiting their own middle-class students or even poor students. The two-eight effect reveals that the sum of dozens of poor students engaged in academic research for one year is not as good as one or two excellent students.
The higher the proportion of international students in a university (without considering the quality of international students, which I think is an intentional bug), the higher the score of this indicator will be.
For China, the indicator of “international students” is useless, because we have a low ageing population, mass education, and many people who are suitable to enter universities, so there is no need to recruit foreign students.
However, the evaluation and funding of universities are related to their performance (QS ranking), and there is a high amount of funding for each foreign student, so our universities are also recruiting a lot of foreign students.
If you take the college entrance examination and your performance can go to Tsinghua University and Peking University, will you choose Zhejiang University, Nanjing University, or even Central South University? I think more than 95% of them will choose Tsinghua University and Peking University without hesitation. Similarly, based on the perception of world famous universities (QS ranking) and ideological differences, the majority of foreign students with the best grades will choose British and American universities, followed by European universities, and then other countries’ universities, and finally they may consider Chinese universities (excellent or even middle grade foreign students coming to Chinese universities are also worried about being regarded as political stains and affecting their political career). Therefore, the majority of foreign students who come to study in China choose Chinese universities only after they have no other choices, most of them have poor grades, and even vagrants are attracted by high scholarships and “bought” by Chinese universities.
Therefore, the QS index does not consider the quality of foreign students, and this bug is probably aimed at Chinese universities. How can Chinese universities willingly accept “foreign students” and treat them as “precious”?
To change the current situation, at least two things should be done.
First, to establish a fair and just orientation, foreign students should be treated exactly the same as Chinese students in terms of admission conditions, scholarships and study conditions, and should not enjoy extra preferences. Encourage colleges and universities not to admit or admit less foreign students. Foreign students take the college entrance examination (undergraduates take it as Henan candidates) and graduate school entrance examination (graduate students take it) organized by China in the year before graduation, and if they fail to meet the admission conditions of the school, the proportion of foreign students enrolled in that school shall be reduced and the funding of the school shall be scaled down.
Secondly, the scientific evaluation of individual universities. In particular, rankings such as QS should be discarded. The number of great craftsmen and the transformation of scientific research achievements of universities can be taken as important indicators to evaluate the work of universities.
