Hong Kong border proposed to build a large cemetery Shenzhen residents opposed

The Hong Kong authorities’ plan to build a large cemetery near the border with Shenzhen has recently attracted opposition from Shenzhen residents, causing the Hong Kong government and the pro-establishment camp to face difficulties at the same time, which is a rare situation in the relationship between the two places in the past.

Hong Kong is a small and densely populated place, and there is certainly a shortage of places to live, as well as a shortage of columbarium niches (columbarium towers), plus the government is generally unable to build columbarium towers near residential areas, resulting in a shortage of columbarium towers.

Many years ago, the authorities proposed to provide a large site for a columbarium in Sha Ling, near Shenzhen, and to provide “one-stop” funeral services, which is expected to be completed next year and can eventually provide 200,000 columbarium spaces.

But the Sha Ling cemetery, which is under construction, has suddenly become a source of concern for Shenzhen residents because the site is only a few hundred meters from the Luohu commercial shopping area on the Shenzhen border, and about 1 kilometer from large shopping centers such as Wanxiang City.

Some Shenzhen residents recently discussed the matter on the Internet, some opposed to the construction, worried about the incineration facilities of the spiritual bone tower will affect some residents of Shenzhen, and criticized the Hong Kong government’s decision to build before not taking into account the ideas of the people of Shenzhen.

According to reports, the Hong Kong government applied to the Legislative Council last year for funding for the construction of the Sha Ling Cemetery, which was withdrawn by opposition from various political parties and groupings, but the authorities recently intended to apply to the Legislative Council for funding, and now the Legislative Council is generally left with pro-government pro-establishment members, according to the road should be able to get passed.

However, the pro-establishment camp is also a pro-Beijing party, but also to take into account the feelings of Shenzhen residents, the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong Legislative Council member Chan Hak-kan pointed out yesterday that the site is adjacent to the Shenzhen business district, and the construction of the cemetery will also affect the development of the Greater Bay Area, suggesting that the Sha Ling to be converted into a logistics site in the Loop.

He predicted that the majority of Legislative Council members have reservations about the Sha Ling cemetery proposal.

However, a group concerned about the spiritual bone tower pointed out that the Sandy Ridge cemetery is one of the local projects available for a large number of tower spaces, if the geographical dispute is shelved, and the government has no other alternative plans, there will be a shortage of tower spaces.

The Hong Kong authorities are still following the plan to build a large cemetery at Sandy Ridge and have no intention of giving up.

According to the information, the original Sha Ling has a small cemetery, is the Hong Kong government dedicated to unclaimed bodies and cemetery, located near Man Kam To, next to the Lo Wu Control Point.

The government proposed nine years ago to build a crematorium, funeral home and visitor center in Sandy Ridge, plans to provide “one-stop” funeral services in Sandy Ridge, the construction plan has been carried out in the land formation project.
