India’s new coronary infections increase by 126,000 a day to break the record New Zealand temporary ban on travelers from India

India’s daily increase in new coronavirus cases set another record.

Data released by the Indian Ministry of Health on Thursday (April 8, 2021) showed that the number of new coronavirus infections in India reached 126,789 in the past 24 hours, with a cumulative total of 12.9 million infections, second only to the United States and Brazil.

The number of new coronavirus deaths in India over the past day increased by 685, with a cumulative death toll of 166,862.

New Zealand announced the same day a temporary ban on travelers from India, which includes New Zealand citizens. Authorities detected 23 people infected with the new coronavirus at ports of entry Thursday, 17 of whom were from India.

In response to the second wave of the new crown outbreak, several Indian cities are currently under strict lockdown measures, including a curfew from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Shopping centers, cinemas, bars, restaurants and places of worship in some cities have been closed since Monday night.

Millions of people worldwide were subject to the new lockdown during the Easter weekend as the number of people infected with the virus surged despite continued vaccination efforts.

President Joe Biden announced Tuesday (April 6) that every adult in the United States will be eligible for the new coronavirus vaccine within two weeks, moving up the original May 1 opening date for vaccinations by two weeks. However, cases of the new coronavirus are still on the rise in some areas of the United States.

Biden said Friday, “We need every American to be fully committed and vigilant in this final effort.”
