On Wednesday (April 7), a “coup” also took place at the Burmese Embassy in the UK, with Ambassador Zaw Sui-min locked out of the embassy and Deputy Ambassador Khieu Win taking over the embassy on behalf of the Burmese military government.
On Wednesday evening, a number of British police officers were deployed outside the Burmese Embassy in the UK, and the Burmese Ambassador Zaw Sui-min was left alone outside the embassy door, unable to enter.
Myanmar Ambassador to the UK Zaw Sui Min: “This is a coup, within the City of London, and it shouldn’t happen.”
Reporter: “But what happened, tell us what happened, how did things go?”
Zaw Sui Min, Myanmar’s ambassador to the UK: “As you can see, they occupied my building, I am the ambassador of Myanmar, I am the ambassador of Myanmar.”
Reporter: “Did you call Rab (the British Foreign Secretary) to explain the situation?”
Burma’s ambassador to the UK, Zaw Sui Min: “Yes, we are waiting for instructions.”
On the same day, there was a protest outside the Burmese embassy, where protest signs and flowers were tied to the embassy’s fence to pay tribute to the innocent people who were shot by the Burmese military.
On March 8 this year, Zoe Sui-min had issued a public statement on behalf of the entire embassy staff, declaring that she stood with the Burmese people and demanding that the military release former Burmese leader Aung San Suu Kyi and former President Win Myint from house arrest. British Foreign Secretary Raab also expressed his appreciation for Zoe Sui-min’s courage as a result.
The break with the military government has led to a “coup” at the Burmese embassy, where Deputy Ambassador Khin Win and the embassy’s military counsellor have locked Zaw Sui Min out of the embassy in a bid to expel him, and Deputy Ambassador Khin has taken over the embassy’s affairs, according to informed sources.
