Genesis breaks world record for most drones in the air

Drone shows are quickly becoming the go-to tool for people and companies wanting to grab attention, and Genesis knows this all too well. The Hyundai-owned car brand broke the Guinness World Record for the most simultaneous aerial drones. 3,281 drones displayed its logo and were advertised in Shanghai on March 29.

This is a significant improvement over the previous record holder, Shenzhen Damoda Intelligent Control Technology. The company installed 3,051 drones in September 2020, which in turn broke the then record of 2,200 drones in Russia a few days earlier. Intel, known for its drone light shows, recently set that record in July 2018 with 2,066 drones flying over Folsom, California.

Such a feat usually relies on choreography software that tells the drones to form a certain shape while coordinating the swarm to avoid collisions.

Of course, this is a publicity stunt, and it wouldn’t be surprising if another company found a way to upgrade the Genesis soon after. It shows how far drone demonstrations have come in just a few years, and could easily drive competition among companies determined to adopt robotic shows.
