Olympic silver medalist turns ‘drug king’, fears life in prison

The 45-year-old Bagare, after winning two consecutive gold medals at the World Championships in 2002 and 2003, won the silver medal in the single and double light boat (Kayak) at the 2004 Athens Olympics, and then won gold again at the World Championships in 2005, but at that time he was accused of using banned substances and was suspended for 24 months, when he insisted that he had not committed a crime.

As his suspension was expiring, Bagare was hoping to challenge for the Beijing Olympics, but missed the Olympics because he was desperate for money to help Drew transport drugs, and has since been on the road to nowhere, having been convicted of drug manufacturing in 2009 and arrested for manufacturing banned substances in 2013.

The two brothers were involved in a large drug smuggling case in 2018. In August of that year, Drew boarded a speedboat and sailed to another large vessel to joint 650 kilograms of drugs, but was intercepted by the Australian police, who estimated the market value of the drugs to be as high as 4.3 billion Taiwan dollars, Drew was caught on the spot, and his brother Bagare was arrested for planning. According to foreign media reports, the case was recently concluded, the court sentenced the two brothers were convicted of the crime, fearing to face life imprisonment.
