The Chinese Communist Party system has magnified bureaucratic privileges to such an extent that even student unions in universities have “official authority”. A few days ago, a video was posted on the Internet, saying that the president of the student union of a university in Shanxi made other students listen to training in the rain, and some of them were physically punished. The video sparked criticism on the Internet, and the university was busy to “put out the fire”.
On April 1, a video surfaced online showing a male student with his hands in his trouser pockets, standing under the eaves and scolding students standing in the rain. Behind him is another student in red doing push-ups, suspected of being physically punished.
According to land media reports, the incident took place at the Yuncheng campus of Shanxi Water Conservancy Vocational and Technical College. Some of the students who got wet revealed that they were in class that night when they were suddenly called downstairs by the student union president to gather. It was only later discovered that there was no big announcement to make, only that students were not allowed to wear umbrellas and hats, and stood in the rain listening to him yell at them, and one student was physically punished, and it took more than 10 minutes before they were allowed to return to class.
On April 2, the school issued a statement confirming the matter, but said that night was the student council staff organized a parade training, due to the rain could not be carried out, the students then returned to the classroom. One of the class leaders had a verbal altercation with a student council member and was punished by doing push-ups. The statement said that the three students involved in the incident have been suspended for examination.
The school statement also showed that the students who made the video online and “sparked public opinion” had been identified.
The video has sparked heated debate online. Many netizens criticized the campus for being full of bureaucracy, “so much official authority”, “the taste of power is lost”, and “what else can you do in society”. Another netizen said, “The ‘official’ culture in the university is never something new”.
