The demographic dividend is disappearing and young people are reluctant to enter factories.

As the demographic dividend in mainland China is gradually weakening, young people are reluctant to join the manufacturing industry and would rather work as delivery riders.

Economic reference newspaper reported that young people dislike manufacturing industry, “after 00” (referring to those born after 2000) prefer to be riders, because of the fixed working hours, strict management system and relatively poor working environment in the manufacturing industry, young people are increasingly reluctant to work in the manufacturing industry, Wolong Electric production line workers said that young people nowadays have not suffered much since childhood, and start to complain when they are tired, “the money is not important. What they value is freedom”.

For example, the streets of many urban villages near Guangzhou’s Zhongda Cloth Market were crowded with garment factory bosses holding samples and recruitment signs, and even long lines of people waiting to be “selected” by the workers, and some bosses complained that “despite the daily salary being increased by nearly 20% compared with previous years, they still couldn’t recruit a few people after standing for a few days.

For example, Jinan Shengquan Group in Shandong Province recruited 1,500 workers after the New Year, but only 150 people were recruited after one month, and no one could be recruited locally; Wolong Electric Motor in Jinan lacked 400 workers, and only 10 people were recruited in the past month. The first line of skilled workers is lacking.

In order to solve the labor shortage, some enterprises have been relaxing the employment qualifications, for example, Wolong Electric has been relaxed to 55 years old from the original limit of 30 years old, but still can not wait for people.

Salaries have also been raised time and again. The monthly salary of workers in Yiwu has increased by about RMB 500, and the daily salary of some garment workers in Guangdong has exceeded RMB 500, while the monthly salary of the most scarce lathe workers, four-line workers and ironers has increased to RMB 6,000 to 10,000.

Compared with the manufacturing industry, delivery, courier and other service industries are more attractive to young people, Alibaba released the “2020 hungry blue rider research report” shows that the 2020 platform riders more than 3 million, of which “after 90” accounted for nearly 50%.

The report also points out that in the past year, the number of newly registered “after 00” blue riders increased nearly two times annually, they prefer flexible and free work, and nearly half of them are willing to recommend the job to their peers.
