A riot at a downtown jail in St. Louis, Missouri, saw inmates breaking windows and shouting “we want a trial” in what is apparently a lengthy judicial process. This is the second riot in the downtown jail this year.
According to local news station KMOV4 in St. Louis, about 60 inmates gathered on the third floor of the building, where they lit trash and started throwing it down, mainly to attract the attention of the nearby crowd. As the crowd began to gather, they shouted “We want a trial,” and some inmates held protest banners with similar comments.
Jacob Long, a spokesman for the St. Louis mayor’s office, said, “The incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. Both of the riots this year have originated with inmates on the third floor. Their original area of activity could not be near the window, but they managed to cover the cameras and get to the side of the window.”

Officials from the St. Louis Police Department and Justice Unit did not immediately respond to the inmates’ requests.
According to local media reports, a similar disturbance occurred at the same jail in February. It took law enforcement officials several hours to quell the disturbance. After that outbreak, inmates had greater freedom to obtain cell locks and walk around the prison.
